Shakira Says Being an Immigrant in the U.S. Amid Trump’s Policies “Means Living in Constant Fear”

Shakira expresses concerns over the persistent anxiety experienced by immigrants currently residing in the U.S., under the tough immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

The Colombian-born vocalist, aged 48, shared her thoughts on how America has evolved since relocating to Miami during her teenage years for musical pursuits, in an interview with BBC News.

At just 19 years old, much like numerous Colombian immigrants seeking a brighter tomorrow, she found herself in America. To aid her in learning English and unraveling its secrets in songwriting, she turned to poetry from Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman, and Bob Dylan.

Over time, Shakira has achieved global stardom, notching several Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and even reaching No. 1 with her song “Hips Don’t Lie”. This year at the 2025 Grammys, she was awarded best Latin pop album for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, adding a fourth Grammy Award to her collection.

The Latin community has faced numerous challenges this year, as Donald Trump resumes his position in the White House and his administration emphasizes stricter enforcement of immigration laws. The recent protests in Los Angeles are a reaction to reported unlawful ICE raids happening across the county.

Shakira expressed that residing in the United States currently feels like existing in a state of persistent anxiety, which is deeply saddening to observe.

In these challenging times, it’s crucial that we stand together more strongly than before. Now, more than ever, we should speak up forcefully to emphasize that while a nation may adjust its immigration regulations, the way we treat every individual must always reflect humanity.

Back in the early part of this year, I too wanted to share a heartfelt message like Shakira did. You see, when I won my gaming tournament, I dedicated that victory to all the fellow gamers who’ve immigrated here, just like me. I said, “To all my gaming brothers and sisters, you are cherished, you are valuable, and I will continue to stand by your side as we conquer new worlds together.

In reaction to the protests in L.A., Trump ordered the California National Guard to suppress the unrest. However, Governor Gavin Newsom countered this move, officially asking the Trump Administration to withdraw their illegal deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them under his control. The issue is now being addressed by the courts, with an appeals court delaying a federal judge’s decision that instructed Trump to relinquish command of National Guard troops back to the state. The appeals court has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday.
