It has come to the attention of the public, through various reports, that the esteemed Iranian cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, has suffered a most unfortunate breach. The onchain data, which one might liken to a scandalous diary entry, reveals that a staggering sum of approximately $82 million has been most audaciously siphoned from its reserves. A rather cheeky hacker collective, styling themselves as the ‘Predatory Sparrow’, has taken it upon themselves to claim responsibility for this coordinated escapade upon the centralized exchange (CEX).
Hackers Plunder Nobitex, Threaten to Unveil Secrets Within a Day
On this fine Wednesday, the astute onchain investigator, ZachXBT, shared his findings, suggesting that “the Iranian crypto exchange ‘Nobitex’ appears to have been exploited for the princely sum of $81.7 million across various chains, including Tron, Bitcoin, and the ever-popular Doge.” The audacious hacking group later confirmed their involvement through rather boastful posts on their Telegram and X accounts.
“In a mere 24 hours, we shall release Nobitex’s source code and internal information from their internal network,” proclaimed the Predatory Sparrow on Telegram, with a flair that would make even the most seasoned novelist blush. “Any assets that remain there after that point shall be at risk.” Oh, the drama!
Gonjeshke Darande, which translates to “Predatory Sparrow,” is a pseudonymous hacker entity that has claimed credit for multiple high-profile cyber intrusions targeting Iran’s critical systems. This group has previously infiltrated a national gas station network, paralyzed the railway grid, disrupted operations at the Khuzestan steel mill, and recently compromised the Iranian banking institution Bank Sepah. Truly, they are the talk of the town!
The hackers, in their whimsicality, employed the following vanity addresses:
- TKFuckiRGCTerroristsNoBiTEXy2r7mNX
- 0xffFFfFFffFFffFfFffFFfFfFfFFFFfFfFFFFDead
- 1FuckiRGCTerroristsNoBiTEXXXaAovLX
- DFuckiRGCTerroristsNoBiTEXXXWLW65t
The initial wallet, a veritable treasure trove, contains $49.42 million in Tron-issued tether (USDT). The second address holds a delightful assortment of tokens from Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible chains, amounting to $24.04 million. A third wallet safeguards 18.472 BTC, valued at $1.92 million at the time of writing. Finally, the fourth address houses DOGE holdings totaling $6.61 million. Quite the haul, I must say!
“The Nobitex exchange is at the very heart of the regime’s efforts to finance terror worldwide, as well as being the regime’s favorite sanctions violation tool,” the hackers declared on X. “These cyberattacks are the result of Nobitex being a key regime tool for financing terrorism and violating sanctions. Associating with regime terror financing and sanction violation infrastructure puts your assets at risk.” How delightfully dramatic!
At the time of this report, Nobitex still holds over $92 million in onchain value. One can only wonder how long that will last!
