In the Amazon Prime Video series “We Were Liars,” based on E. Lockhart’s novel of the same name, we learn about the painful reality behind the events that occurred to Cadence Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind) during a distressing accident last summer. The story unfolds over eight episodes, focusing on Cadence’s struggle to recall what took place during her 16th summer at her grandfather’s island retreat, Beechwood. As she battles with the consequences of a traumatic brain injury, Cadence gradually discovers a deeply moving secret that irrevocably alters her life.
What Happened to Cadence in We Were Liars TV Show Ending
After sustaining a brain injury during her 16th summer in Beechwood, Cadence felt compelled to explore what had transpired since she has memory lapses about that time. Unfortunately, her own family, the Sinclairs, were reluctant to disclose the truth. Her mother, in particular, discouraged others from sharing details of the night of her accident, arguing it was for “her protection”.
Even so, a resilient Cadence teamed up with Gat, Mirren, and Johnny to uncover all the events of that fateful night, yet she wasn’t prepared for the gut-wrenching revelation.
In my perspective, as I delved deeper into the captivating narrative of “We Were Liars”, it gradually became apparent that Cadence, Gat, Mirren, and Johnny were responsible for igniting a flame that reduced the venerable Clairmont mansion to ashes. This was their covert way of delivering a stark message to the senior Sinclairs – a family torn apart by the insatiable hunger for inheritance, fueled by their relentless pursuit through their grandfather’s will.
In the symbolic representation of chaos within their family, Cadence orchestrated a plan to set fire to the Clairmont mansion, procuring the necessary fuel from the boathouse. Unfortunately, her scheme unraveled when it was revealed in “We Were Liars” that all three of her co-conspirators perished in the blaze. The individuals assisting her in the present day, however, are not the living, but rather spectral versions of their former selves.
In the mansion, a fire tragically claimed the lives of Johnny and Mirren. Meanwhile, Gat attempted to rescue Cadence who had ventured in search of her grandmother’s prized black pearls, a symbol of the Sinclair family’s wealth. However, he too was overcome by the flames. Miraculously, Cadence managed to evade death, escaping from the mansion only to be propelled into the sea due to an explosion caused by a gas line within the mansion.
In the aftermath of being the sole survivor, Cadence grappled with guilt, yet the conclusion of “We Were Liars” demonstrated that she had the fortitude to sever ties with her family despite Harris Sinclair’s warning of revealing the truth about her part in the fire (for a deeper understanding of the Sinclair family lineage, delve into “We Were Liers”).
What’s Next for Cadence in We Were Liars?
By the conclusion of “We Were Liars”, it couldn’t be argued that Cadence underwent significant personal growth. Regrettably, this transformation occurred following a devastating incident.
Instead of accepting Harris’ offer to inherit the Sinclair family position and wealth, Cadence decided to carve out a new path for herself, choosing to distance herself from the Sinclair family name. This move signified her break with the deception and manipulation that the Sinclairs are notorious for.
In conversation with TV Insider, Emily Alyn Lind explained why her character, Cadence, chose to separate from her family. She pointed out that this action symbolizes Cadence refusing to support Harris’ deception.
She’s planning to express that she won’t stand by her grandfather Harris during the conflict, nor will she support him. Instead, she intends to distance herself from the entire situation.
I mentioned to Harris that, sooner or later, Cadence might find herself needing to confront her role in the fire.
In a hypothetical Season 2 of “We Were Liars,” the story might delve deeper into the repercussions of Cadence’s actions in the finale. With Cadence now eluding her past by fleeing from the family, she may encounter new companions to aid her personal development, but she should anticipate facing the eventual consequences of her choices.
Even though Cadence may be privy to some or all of the scandalous past of the Sinclair family, she could leverage this knowledge to challenge Harris’ controlling behavior and ultimately break his hold over the family.
