heads up: some spoilers for the TV series ‘The Gilded Age’ might be present below. If you haven’t yet watched it on HBO or HBO Max, you’ve been gently notified.
As you were about to bid farewell to the festivities, the broadcast schedule for 2025 has brought us back together with the opulent historical spectacle of The Gilded Age‘s third season. With Julian Fellowes, the series creator and co-writer, bringing his drama back to life, there are already some intriguing plot points looming for New York’s high society in the late 1800s.
After watching the first episode, “Who Is in Charge Here?”, and finding its cliffhanger ending intriguing, I was prepared for a longer wait before seeing this storyline’s resolution. However, instead of waiting, HBO surprised me by showing a sneak peek of the rest of the season during the post-episode segment titled “This Season On…” This unexpected move has left me quite frustrated with HBO.
The Gilded Age Season 3 Starts With Two Pretty Huge Cliffhangers
In the series “Who Is in Charge Here?”, Peggy Scott (played by Denée Benton) initially feels a bit unwell, but her condition worsens significantly, leaving her nearly bedbound. As it appears that her life is at stake, the stern yet fair Agnes van Rhijin (Christine Baranski) calls for Dr. Lewis (James Riordan), a physician, to attend to her. However, since he does not accept patients of color, the doctor assigned to The Gilded Age declines his responsibility and leaves.
In the opening of Season 3, we witness young Gladys Russell (played by Taissa Farmiga) fleeing her home, which seems to foreshadow significant developments. Undeniably, this event will play a key role in the series’ narrative for Season 3. However, contrary to expectations, Peggy’s storyline appears to be reaching a conclusion sooner than one might anticipate after such a dramatic turn of events. Now that we’ve enjoyed the main course, let me voice my concern about a minor issue with HBO regarding…
Both Episodic Cliffhangers Are Ruined By That “This Season On…” Trailer
Two significant queries lingered amidst the finale of the eagerly awaited debut season of ‘The Gilded Age’: will Peggy recover and when might Gladys reappear from her undisclosed location? However, the precise responses to these questions no longer matter, since it appears that the specifics are less crucial compared to the overall picture.
In the “This Season On…” preview, we catch brief glimpses of Peggy Scott making a recovery and preparing for significant upheavals ahead. It’s likely that these turbulent events will stem from changes in her love life.
In no time, Gladys Russell is bound to return home, pondering over whether she’ll yield to mother Bertha (Carrie Coo) and agree to marry the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), thus putting an end to any lingering questions about her decision.

With plans starting at just $9.99 a month (and additional ad-free options available for higher tiers), HBO Max opens the door to a world of entertainment. Currently streaming are all previous seasons of “The Gilded Age”, with new episodes from Season 3 premiering every Sunday. For those who enjoy drawing room dramas, there’s an abundance of similar content within this extensive digital library. Don’t miss out on this great deal!
In a different phrasing, you might say: Isn’t it a bit of an anticlimax that The Gilded Age gave away most of its tension by revealing so much at the end? I’m still eagerly looking forward to the next episode, hoping for more hints about the rumored Downton Abbey crossover. However, now I’ll approach future developments with a bit more caution.
Maybe it would be wiser to exclude shows like “Catherine the Great” and similar series such as “Downton Abbey”, listed under the platform’s “You May Also Like” section, from your current project list. It appears this is the most effective way to steer clear of potential spoilers, especially since there will be fewer spoiler-inclined reveals throughout the remaining episodes of Season 3.

At present, I plan to reconsider drafting a formal letter by hand, to be sent in a sealed envelope to HBO headquarters. Alternatively, I might choose to return to viewing the premiere of Season 3 for “The Gilded Age” series, which will help me delve deeper into the issues and queries that fans should be examining more closely. This isn’t solely due to my struggle to find an envelope, but because it offers a valuable opportunity for exploration.
