Christopher Nolan’s Epic ‘The Odyssey’ Teaser Trailer Leaks Online

The highly awaited initial trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie, The Odyssey, has been set free for public viewing.

I, as a passionate gamer and movie enthusiast, was thrilled to catch a sneak peek of the upcoming “mythic action epic” during my screening of Jurassic Park: Rebirth on Tuesday night. Universal graciously decided to showcase the film’s trailer before the main event!

As a gamer, I haven’t seen an online release of the trailer yet, but that’s just how Christopher Nolan rolls. He wants his trailers to be more than just a quick YouTube clip; he aims for a full-blown cinematic experience. True to form, the first sneak peek at his 2023 Oscar-winning blockbuster, “Oppenheimer,” premiered exclusively in movie theaters.

Regrettably for Universal and Nolan, modern technology like smartphones has its drawbacks. Consequently, the trailer appeared online almost instantly, resulting in a video that, as you might expect, lacked the high-quality, cinematic feel. The Hollywood Reporter is refraining from sharing the leaked trailer, although they have provided a description of it instead.

As a die-hard fan, I found it quite unexpected when they unveiled the trailer for “The Odyssey” this early since the movie isn’t set to hit theaters until next July. However, considering the massive anticipation surrounding the upcoming “Jurassic World” film, projected to rake in over $100 million at the box office and being Universal’s most secure bet for months, it seems logical to tie in “Jurassic” with the initial marketing push for Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated blockbuster.

Since the adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem is still in progress, it’s not surprising that the trailer serves more as a sneak peek rather than a full reveal. The teaser commences with images of a foreboding sea accompanied by a voiceover: “Darkness… Zeus’ decrees shattered… I am without a ruler ever since my lord perished. He understood it was an unbeatable war… Yet, somehow, he triumphed.

Afterward, the trailer displays a scene featuring Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, engaged in a chat with a still unnamed character portrayed by Jon Bernthal.

Telemachus expresses his need to understand what became of his father. Bernthal’s character then calls out to the crowd, asking if anyone has a tale about Odysseus. He inquires if there is someone with a story, followed by stating various speculations: some claim he is wealthy, some claim he is impoverished, some say he is gone, while others suggest that he might be imprisoned.

Next, the trailer presents drifting timber out at sea, where a figure – likely Matt Damon portraying the Greek king – is seen reclining upon it.

Furthermore, an illustrious ensemble graces this production, with stars such as Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Mia Goth, to name a few.

The movie titled The Odyssey, slated to have a production budget of $250 million, marks the costliest project in Christopher Nolan’s filmmaking career. Unlike conventional films, it will be exclusively filmed using IMAX cameras, making it the first major production to attempt such an approach. Although one might label this venture as a risk, Nolan’s billion-dollar success with his atomic energy biopic a few years back serves as proof that he is among the rare directors capable of launching a film. The epic scale and high-profile cast of The Odyssey should undoubtedly attract a substantial audience.

In this timeless tale, we follow the journey of the ruler of Ithaca, Odysseus, as he embarks on a hazardous voyage back home after the Trojan War. Throughout his adventure, he encounters various legendary creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the tempting Sirens, the sorceress Circe, and even ventures to the realm of the dead.

Filming began in February across various locations in Greece, Morocco, and Italy. The movie is set for release on July 17, 2026.
