Belmond’s New Train – the ‘Britannic Explorer’ – is Peak British Luxury

In the wake of news that the British royal family’s iconic Royal Train will be retired in 2027, luxury hospitality firm Belmond (a part of LVMH) has unveiled plans for a sumptuous new locomotive named the Britannic Explorer. This extravagant train is touted as “the first luxury sleeper train in England and Wales.” The Britannic Explorer will be adding to Belmond’s already impressive collection of opulent sleeper trains, such as the Andean Explorer that transports passengers on a journey through Peru’s lakes and mountains, and the Royal Scotsman, with its 40 years of service and adventures across the Scottish Highlands. The Britannic Explorer will embark on its inaugural journey this month.

Beginning July 21st, the “Britannic Explorer” will set sail from London’s Victoria Station, embarking on meticulously planned three-night journeys. These voyages will transport guests along England’s beautiful southern Cornish coastline, up north through Cumbria to the scenic Lake District, and into the heart of Wales before returning to the city.

The train boasts a grand total of 18 cabins, including 15 standard suites and 3 luxurious grand suites. It draws inspiration from the charming British countryside, as evidenced by its use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and wool throughout. These elements are meant to reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, while a palette of earthy colors adds to the “Britannic Explorer’s” lively personality.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: Although the Britannic Explorer is brimming with distinctly British elements, this brand is urging potential travelers to toss aside traditional stiffness. Instead, they claim their latest train model represents contemporary British spirit. They describe the interior as sophisticated yet daring, and a blend of the timeless and the surprising. Bold fabrics are contrasted against layered textures and carefully chosen antiques, creating a warm, rich atmosphere that combines classic elegance with modern style.

To realize its vision, Belmond recruited contemporary designers from throughout the United Kingdom – such as Luke Edward Hall, Mel Campion, and Olly Fathers from Brixton – who embody the evolving essence of the country. These designers worked together with Albion Nord studio in London on the train’s design. The result, as stated by Belmond, is a train that combines “history, fashion, and character to produce something surprising and unconventional.

On the Britannic Explorer, the dining experience matches the rest of the top-notch journey. The menus are designed by Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan, who is known as a leader in Britain’s farm-to-table movement. He will change the menus seasonally, but the food will always highlight the finest British ingredients. Additionally, attention has been given to health and wellness, with guests having access to a special suite created by Belmond and Wildsmith, which they describe as a peaceful haven for relaxation and rejuvenation on board.

It’s quite serendipitous that Belmond’s timing is perfect: 183 years after Queen Victoria embarked on her first journey aboard the soon-to-retire Royal Train, the Britannic Explorer could provide both royals and commoners an opportunity to tour the country in a manner befitting royalty. Sailing along the coast of Cornwall or enjoying wood-fired saunas in Wales, the Britannic Explorer offers a distinctive way to immerse oneself in the United Kingdom’s unique experiences.

The “Britannic Explorer” sets sail on July 2025 and reservations are currently being accepted through Belmond’s website. Prices begin at around £11,000 GBP ($15,000 USD) for a three-night stay in a double cabin.
