The Hot Docs Film Festival, dealing with an ongoing financial reorganization, has experienced a higher number of key personnel leaving the organization.
As a fervent admirer, I’m sharing the news that Heather Haynes, our beloved director of programming at North America’s largest documentary festival, and Elizabeth Radshaw, who oversees industry programs, have decided to embark on new journeys. This move comes before we initiate a strategic planning process, signifying potential changes in our festival’s future direction.
The festival expressed heartfelt appreciation for the priceless work done by two individuals in building up Hot Docs over time. So far, it remains undecided who will take on these roles and how the transition will occur.
In April 2025, Diana Sanchez takes up her role as the new executive director of Hot Docs, succeeding interim director Janice Dawes. Sanchez will now be in charge of documentary programming and industry events at the film festival, guiding Hot Docs through its upcoming uncertainties.
In July 2024, Dawes took over the leading position at the Toronto-based festival, following Marie Nelson’s departure. Nelson was a previous executive at ABC News and Disney. The festival faced an uncertain future after experiencing turmoil during its 2024 edition. This turbulence led to programmers abruptly resigning due to financial difficulties and the departure of the artistic director, Hussain Currimbhoy.
As a gamer, I remember vividly in October 2024 when Hot Docs announced some tough times financially, struggling to bounce back after the pandemic. The news spread like wildfire, causing a mass exodus among staff and attendees. Fast forward to 2025, they appointed Haynes as their new programming director, a role she took on during a streamlined edition of the documentary festival that ran from April 24th to May 4th.
In the year 2009, Radshaw assumed the role of Director of Industry Programs at Hot Docs, an organization established in 1993. For many years, Hot Docs had hosted a Toronto Documentary Forum, a platform that facilitated connections between international film producers and buyers for the purpose of striking deals.
