As director James Gunn’s “Superman” movie is set to premiere, he shared insights about the upcoming chapter of the DC Universe entitled “DCU’s Gods & Monsters“. Gunn, alongside Peter Safran, are preparing to unveil their vision for the revamped DC Universe with the release of “Superman”, marking the beginning of a new phase in screen storytelling for the Blue Brand. Similar to their counterparts at Marvel, Gunn and Safran have chosen to divide the DCU narrative into chapters, or phases, with the initial one being titled Chapter One: Gods & Monsters.

It’s uncertain what specific elements will be part of Chapter One or how the story will conclude, but it appears that Gunn and his team have a powerful strategy for their upcoming DCU comic book movie and TV series. This initial phase of the DCU includes previously announced projects such as Superman, Supergirl, Green Lanterns, The Brave and the Bold, along with many others.

In a recent conversation with Omelete in Brazil, Gunn shared details about the main narrative for DCU’s first chapter.

When inquired about whether the Gods & Monsters phase would primarily explore “‘the response of governments to the number of superheroes’“, Gunn swiftly denied this, instead hinting that it would serve as a significant underlying storyline throughout the main narrative of Chapter One.

On July 11th, Friday, the first chapter of DC Universe, titled “Superman,” begins. This fresh take by Gunn and Safran introduces a brand-new ensemble of characters within a reimagined, interconnected DC universe. David Corenswet, a popular actor, will spearhead the series as both Clark Kent and Superman, with Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan taking on the role of Lois Lane. Following “Superman,” the initial phase of the DCU will proceed with the release of “Peacemaker” Season 2 (scheduled for August 21st) and future releases like “Supergirl” and “Lanterns” in the following year.

Why I Am Excited About the DCU Chapter One Story

Although James Gunn has indicated that the government’s response to the number of metahumans is secondary in the grand scheme of the DCU Chapter One narrative, I believe its significance might grow substantially in the future of the DC Universe, possibly even surpassing what he suggests.

A significant portion of marketing for Superman revolves around the concept of managing or dealing with metahumans (in Superman’s case, extraterrestrials). This is shown in various ways such as villains like Lex Luthor capturing and detaining super-powered individuals, or teams of superheroes backed by corporations. The world’s response to an overflow of caped heroes, which is a common theme, has been vividly portrayed.

Fans have caught a glimpse of this, as David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman hints at him facing the repercussions of involving himself in multiple global political issues. It seems that being an enhanced hero carries more everyday complications than he initially anticipated when he first embarked on his do-gooder journey.

It would be wise for DC Studios to prioritize this aspect in their initial attempt and also in the establishment of their new universe.

Over time, it seems as though events in DCU Chapter One are gradually building up to the first authentic gathering of the Justice League, with iconic characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman uniting to confront a shared menace, much like the divine trio of DC superheroes.

In what other world would it be more fitting for such a team to arise than one where both the populace and governing entities are uncertain about how to handle these heroic figures, who generally don’t respond to any particular international authority.

In the upcoming film, I find myself grappling with a similar dilemma as Kal-El, portrayed by Corenswet in ‘Man of Steel’. The public’s sentiment towards me seems to shift unfavorably at certain points, much like Superman in this new adaptation.

It might require a more substantial threat than any single government has faced separately to lead them to acknowledge and accept the widespread presence of metahumans and extraordinary individuals worldwide. This significant event could potentially culminate in a dramatic climax, which is likely to occur at the end of Chapter One.
