Umamusume Pretty Derby is an engaging game that revolves around training female characters for horse-like races, which explains the name of both the game and its franchise. In this game, similar to other gacha games, you’ll need to draw characters to compete in these exciting races.
In the animated series Umamusume Pretty Derby, the main characters can be divided into two groups: the principal characters, who we’ll be coaching and competing in races with, and the auxiliary cards. The latter function similarly to side characters, weapons, or items in games like Genshin Impact, offering stats and various training opportunities to aid the main character.
With all of that in mind, is Umamusume free-to-play (F2P) friendly? Let’s take a look!
Is Umamusume: Pretty Derby Free-to-Play Friendly?
If you’re mostly a casual gacha gamer, then yes, Umamusume is very F2P-friendly.
Initially, I was taken aback upon launching the game as I found a generous stack of free Carats waiting for me in my email. Having just finished the tutorials, I was rewarded with approximately 7,000 Carats that I could utilize instantly. These valuable resources can be employed in the character and support banners, or in other words, the “Scout” feature within Umamusume>.
In some instances, you’ll encounter login events offering resources such as one pull’s worth of Carats, though the quantity may differ each time. Based on my familiarity with Japanese gacha games like D4DJ Groovy Mix, these complimentary premium currencies can deplete rapidly. Therefore, it is advisable to utilize them prudently, focusing on character and support banners that genuinely interest you.
If you mainly appreciate the primary narrative, game events, and the training mechanics of the girls, you won’t need to worry too much about acquiring specific characters or supports perfectly. Plus, rerolling in Umamusume is relatively simpler compared to most gacha games.

In general gaming scenarios, including gacha games like “Umamusume Pretty Derby,” I personally find Player vs. Player (PvP) modes less appealing. It seems that free-to-play participants might encounter a significant challenge in this aspect of the game. However, feel free to join and compete if you wish, but keep in mind that reaching top performance may prove difficult.
Indeed, it’s not out of reach, for some players who don’t spend money are still able to compete with those who do. Achieving this feat will demand a good deal of luck, strategic planning, and an in-depth grasp of the game mechanics, including skills like timing, track selection, and distance management.
While it might seem difficult since free players have to compete with paying ones, it’s possible if you have good strategy, understanding of the game, and a bit of luck on your side.
While Umamusume is generally free-to-play, dedicated players may find themselves considering the investment of Real Money in Premium Carats (Alternative for Carrots) to gain a competitive edge.
