After much anticipation, Peacock has officially confirmed our long-held suspicions: Michael James Shaw will portray Axel in the second season of Twisted Metal. On July 31, the first three episodes will premiere. For the first time, we get a glimpse of the beloved character known for his massive tires on his arms, in the official trailer for the upcoming episodes. The footage hints at more hits from the early 2000s, such as the catchy but not-so-subtle Ludacris tune: “Move B.
In the thrilling auto race orchestrated by the enigmatic Calypso, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan, Axel is among the many drivers competing. The grand reward? A single wish, free from any obligations. Meanwhile, John Doe (Anthony Mackie), Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz), and novice Mayhem (Saylor Bell Curda) aim to emerge victorious in this contest. Their ultimate goal is to abolish the social divide between the fortified cities and those struggling beyond their borders.
It’s undeniably an admirable goal, however, as Mackie points out, “This season everyone seems like a villain since we’re competing in a tournament.” In essence, winning this competition, which shares its name with the show itself, means witnessing the elimination of all opponents along the way.
In Season 2, the cast expands to incorporate Joe Seanoa and Will Arnett, who lend their talents as both the physical and vocal representation of Sweet Tooth. Mike Mitchell joins as Stu, while Patty Guggenheim takes on the role of Raven. Tiana Okoye is introduced as Dollface, better known as John Doe’s long-lost sister. Richard De Klerk portrays Mr. Grimm, and Lisa Gilroy plays Vermin.
In 2023, Michael Jonathan Smith, the showrunner/executive producer, shared his excitement with NBC Insider about bringing these characters to life and exploring what makes them amusing and heartbreaking. He looks forward to assembling all these characters in one place during the tournament and observing their interactions. He’s particularly intrigued by how Preacher will respond to Bloody Mary and Grimm to Sweet Tooth. There are numerous engaging, interconnected character moments that Smith can’t wait to delve into, describing it as a fresh toy box.
