Hell Is Us Dives Into The Soulslike Formula Like No Other

Story Highlights

  • Hell Is Us is holding no prisoners at the moment, offering a unique dive into the Soulslike formula.
  • The game’s latest gameplay reveal trailer showcases the game’s diverse nature and environment.
  • It comes out sometime in 2025 and does not have a set release date as of the time of writing.

To put it plainly, I must confess that I’m quite fond of games resembling Souls, so when I hear about a new one being released sometime this year or next, my enthusiasm gets the better of me before I’ve had a chance to fully investigate. Unfortunately, this eagerness often results in disappointment as it’s not simple to perfectly emulate this genre and achieve success.

The creative venture titled “Hell Is Us” appears to be on a positive trajectory, given our current observations. One aspect that immediately catches the eye about this initiative is none other than its Art Director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletete, who has also played pivotal roles in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deux Ex: The Fall. In simpler terms, it’s the skilled leadership of Mr. Belletete that stands out at first glance within this project.

If, like me, you’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing these games, then you’re well aware that Hell Is Us offers an array of visually breathtaking environments.

In the video, Jonathan explains that Hell Is Us draws inspiration from the gaming era of the 1990s, which was characterized by less guidance and fewer easy solutions or “walkthroughs.” While this may appeal to those who enjoy a challenging game, an increased difficulty level can sometimes act as a two-sided tool, with insufficient visual cues potentially causing unnecessary frustration.

It’s quite encouraging to see that Rogue Factor is adopting this strategy, as it suggests that “Hell Is Us” may be promising, given its compelling narrative and the ambition it shows in emulating the Soulslike genre.

According to Jonathan, the game’s settings and visuals serve not just as decorations, but as a means of conveying messages. Therefore, it is essential to engage in the game. By keeping your eyes and ears open to non-player characters (NPCs), you will navigate, uncover hidden details, claim your discoveries as your own, and experience the immense joy that comes with that process.

The Soulslike Genre Has Picked Up Tremendous Traction In Recent Times

It’s no secret that FromSoftware, known for their Dark Souls series and other popular franchises, has sparked a new genre with its innovative game design. This influence has encouraged developers worldwide to create similar titles, such as Lords of the Fallen, Lies of P, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and many more in 2023 alone. It appears that this trend of challenging, immersive action RPGs is here to stay.

2025 marks the anticipated release of the game “Hell Is Us” on platforms such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Feel free to share your thoughts about this intriguing project in the comments section below!
