James Gunn Admits He Had ‘No Clue’ About This 1 Thing at Marvel

During a recent chat, James Gunn shared insights on his time as a Marvel filmmaker and admitted there was one area within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that left him clueless. Known for helming three Guardians of the Galaxy films under Marvel Studios, Gunn later joined forces with his long-standing partner Peter Safran as co-head of the DC Universe (DCU).

James Gunn says he ‘never understood’ what Marvel’s Phases were

In a recent chat with GQ, James Gunn discussed some unforgettable films he’s contributed to, and naturally, his time with Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series were brought up.

Gunn admitted he was unclear about the different stages in the MCU. He chuckled and confessed, “I’ve always been puzzled by what each phase in Marvel signified. Honestly, I don’t know what any of it refers to, let alone have a clue about its meaning.

Significantly, James Gunn contributed to both writing and directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, followed by penning and directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023. Additionally, he was responsible for creating The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Marvel, which was released in 2022.

Marvel Studios organizes its projects into distinct stages, which they call “phases.” The initial three phases are collectively known as “The Infinity Saga,” whereas the subsequent three phases are generally referred to as “The Multiverse Saga.” The first Guardians of the Galaxy film was released during Phase 2, while the second and third movies were unveiled as part of Phases 3 and 5 respectively.

During the same conversation, Gunn disclosed that he penned the significance and backstory of the Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a quick span of time, approximately three minutes, while simply taking a seat.

On July 11, 2025, you can catch director Gunn’s latest project, “Superman,” in U.S. theaters. This movie marks the beginning of a new chapter as it is the inaugural cinematic release within the DC Universe.
