Ryan Murphy, known for his skill at tackling complex and unsettling themes from American Horror Story, has applied that talent to the Monster anthology series, now streaming exclusively on Netflix. The first season features Evan Peters portraying Jeffrey Dahmer in a gripping account of his life. Subsequent seasons have included a controversial take on the Lyle and Erik Mendendez story, and upcoming Season 3 will star Charlie Hunnam as infamous serial killer Ed Gein. Speculation about Season 4 suggests that it will delve into the tale of Lizzie Borden.
Though you might not know the specifics of the infamous 19th-century murder case where Lizzie Borden is famously linked to an axe and “whacks” in a rhyme, you may have heard of it. As announced by Nexus Point News, the fourth season of Monster will delve into the murders of Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother. Lizzie was suspected as the culprit during her era, despite being acquitted in court. It’s intriguing to speculate how Ryan Murphy and his team will portray this story. Production is said to start this fall in LA.
According to recent news, the narrative of Lizzie Borden, her family members including her father, stepmother, and housekeeper will be the focus of the upcoming fourth season. Ian Brennan, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is set to pen the new episodes together with Ryan Murphy. I’m eagerly looking forward to their interpretation of this story, especially since the events taking place in the 19th century mean that none of the characters involved can respond like Erik Menendez did when portrayed in “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
In relation to Season 2 depicting the story of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are accused of murdering their parents, with claims of abuse used in their defense, we notice a recurring theme for the Netflix series titled “Monster”. While Seasons 1 and 3 seem to be centered around infamous serial killers, it appears that Seasons 2 and 4 will also tackle cases involving parents being killed by their own children. Essentially, even-numbered seasons appear to focus on family murders, with a strong likelihood of serial killers featured in the odd-numbered ones!
Evan Peters, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer, shared that Ryan Murphy had a rule back then not to tell the story from the perspective of the serial killer. I’m intrigued about how this guideline might (or might not) influence the Lizzie Borden series, given that both Dahmer and Ed Gein were acknowledged killers, while the Menendez brothers were convicted for their parents’ murders. However, it’s important to note that in history, Lizzie Borden was found not guilty of the murders and is primarily known as a suspect during her time.
It seems that the start of production for Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s adaptation of Lizzie Borden hasn’t begun yet, which is expected to be in fall this year. Additionally, the season based on Ed Gein of Monster doesn’t have a release date set. Consequently, the upcoming Lizzie Borden series remains a bit further down the line. In the meantime, fans can enjoy rewatching the first two seasons, which are currently streaming on Netflix.
