Frank Castle, commonly known as the Punisher, is Marvel Comics’ most violent character who could arguably be categorized as a hero. His backstory involves serving in the Vietnam War, marrying a woman named Maria, and having two children together. However, their family was brutally murdered by New York City gangsters, leaving Frank as the sole survivor. This tragic event caused a significant shift in Frank’s psyche, leading him to wage a one-man war against crime. The Punisher is unwavering, impossible to reason with, and refuses to be dissuaded from his mission. For years, he has killed ruthlessly, mercilessly, and without discrimination.
Regardless, or possibly as a result of his extremely violent character, the Punisher has frequently been translated beyond the comic books. While some of this adaptation has taken shape through cartoon and video game roles, Frank has predominantly been the focus in live-action movies and TV series. Numerous well-known actors have slipped into Castle’s combat boots since 1989, and there is no indication that the character’s representation on various media platforms will diminish. Marvel Television and Disney+ are set to unveil an MCU Punisher Special Presentation that will continue with Frank following his role in Daredevil: Born Again.
Jon Bernthal, known for his portrayal of the antihero since 2016, is set to embark on his first solo adventure since 2019. As per DanielRPK, an online movie tipster, the main antagonist of this special is rumored to be a powerful female criminal figure. This will mark a significant change as it will be the first time in over three decades that a Punisher-centric media project will have a woman as its principal adversary, breaking a 36-year trend.
Disney+’sPunisher Special Presentation will arrive sometime in 2026.

Lady Tanaka – The Punisher (1989)
By the late 1980s, Dolph Lundgren had become quite popular. Standing tall with impressive muscles, this Sweden-born actor was fresh from his roles in “Rocky IV” and “Masters of the Universe”. New World Pictures and director Mark Goldblatt believed that Lundgren’s imposing physique would be ideal for the lead role in their 1989 film “The Punisher”, after their initial choice, Christopher Lambert, got injured and had to withdraw. Interestingly, despite not receiving a theatrical release in America, this movie has since gained cult classic status.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the casting of the versatile Japanese-American actress Kim Miyori. She was chosen to portray Lady Tanaka, a formidable Yakuza boss who seized the opportunity to expand her empire by filling the power void in New York City’s Mafia scene. Needless to say, this move didn’t sit well with Frank Castle, who stormed Tanaka’s headquarters, guns blazing, and brought down the relentless gangster once and for all. Lady Tanaka, a unique adversary created specifically for the movie, has never made an appearance in any comic before.
Howard Saint – The Punisher (2004)
After a span of fifteen years since Castle made his initial cinematic debut, Lionsgate attempted to reintroduce the brutal avenger to the big screen. For the 2004 movie adaptation of The Punisher, director Jonathan Hensleigh chose Thomas Jane as the lead. This version of Frank Castle deviated from traditional lore in an intriguing way. In this iteration, Castle is an FBI agent nearing retirement when a tragic event occurs. The ruthless crime lord Howard Saint (an original character not found in comics) orders his men to eliminate not only Castle’s immediate family but also his extended relatives. However, before the tragedy strikes, Castle’s elementary-school-aged son gifts him a black t-shirt with a skull on it as a simple token of affection.
In a different wording: John Travolta is the one who gave life to character Howard Saint, playing him flamboyantly in “The Punisher” as if he were munching on cotton candy. A grudge was sworn by Saint against Frank Castle, due to his FBI work leading to the demise of his son Bobby, a troublemaking arms dealer. The 2004 version of “The Punisher” is not as acclaimed as the 1989 one. Critics often praised Thomas Jane’s acting but frequently criticized Travolta, who, with his carefree style, was deemed dull and uninspiring as Howard Saint.
Jigsaw – Punisher: War Zone (2008)
In the later part of the 2000s, Lionsgate decided to rejuvenate The Punisher on screen, prompted by Thomas Jane’s decision not to participate in a follow-up. This led to the production of “Punisher: War Zone“. Directed by Lexi Alexander, “War Zone” stands out as one of the most brutally violent live-action depictions of The Punisher to date (In fact, he destroys a man in mid-air using a heat-seeking missile at some point). In this rendition, the character of Frank Castle was played by Ray Stevenson, who portrayed the complex character Baylan Skoll, a Force-user in one of his final roles on “Ahsoka”.
In a brutal face-off, Stevenson’s version of the Punisher squared off against one of his most iconic enemies: Jigsaw, portrayed by Dominic West from “The Wire.” Jigsaw earned his moniker due to his gruesomely scarred, mosaic-like visage. Interestingly, Jigsaw was the initial comic book adversary to appear on screen as the Punisher’s antagonist. The film “War Zone” marked the last standalone Punisher movie produced so far, possibly because of its disappointing box office performance at the time. However, in subsequent years, it seems to have gained more favor with audiences.
Jigsaw – The Punisher Season 1 (2017)
Following his standout performance in Daredevil Season 1, Jon Bernthal went on to secure his own TV series as The Punisher, created by Steve Lightfoot. This show aired on Netflix from 2017 to 2019, with Bernthal playing the main character for both seasons. His portrayal of Frank Castle has been widely praised, and he reprised this role in Daredevil: Born Again, set in 2025. In the initial season, Castle investigates the murders of his family, uncovering a vast conspiracy in the process.
In simpler terms, Ben Barnes, known for his role as Logan Delos in HBO’s Westworld, reprised his character Jigsaw in a new way. At the end of Season 1, Jigsaw’s face was severely damaged when Frank shattered it against a mirror. But when he appeared again in Season 2, Jigsaw had only minor and barely noticeable facial scars, which left Ben Barnes somewhat disappointed.
John Pilgrim – The Punisher Season 2 (2019)
In the concluding season of “Punisher,” Netflix’s standalone series, character Frank Castle finds himself at a pivotal ethical juncture, grappling with doubts about his unyielding dedication to a warped sense of justice. Jon Bernthal returns to assume the leading role, one he would later relinquish for a span of six years.
In Season 2, another character created for the series was under Frank’s focus: The character John Pilgrim, a fanatic religious figure. This character, although loosely based on a minor comic character named the Mennonite, was portrayed by Josh Stewart. Since the second year, Stewart has been a recurring cast member on Criminal Minds.
