YouTube Will Get Rid of Its Main Trending List As Viewing Habits Shift

YouTube is phasing out its Trending page and “Trending Now” list, instead focusing on category-specific charts, as the trends being observed are becoming increasingly specialized or specific to certain areas.

Over the next few weeks, a shift is imminent as YouTube acknowledges a substantial drop in traffic to its Trending section over the past five years. This alteration is believed to be driven by an increase in “micro-trends” and users increasingly relying on recommendations, search suggestions, Shorts, comments, and online communities to discover trending content instead.

Initially, when we introduced our Trending page in 2015, identifying ‘what’s hot’ was relatively straightforward, as it mainly involved compiling a single list of popular viral videos that were generating buzz. However, fast forward to today, trends encompass a multitude of videos originating from various fandoms. Moreover, we now witness more niche trends being appreciated by diverse groups than ever before,” the company stated in their blog post.

Rather than displaying personalized recommendations, YouTube now highlights popular content across various categories such as trending music videos, top podcasts, and movie trailers in its YouTube Charts. In the future, they plan to expand this selection with additional category-focused charts.

As a devoted YouTube enthusiast, I’m excited to share that my personalized recommendation feed will continue to deliver content tailored to my interests. Moreover, creators will still have access to valuable tools that help them understand what resonates with their audience. However, the introduction of category-specific trending lists might bring about changes in how creators are ranked and perceived across different niches compared to a universal list. It’s intriguing to ponder over these potential shifts!

In this ongoing journey, I’m excited to say that we’ll keep mirroring how trends unfold and impact our worldwide fanbase, as expressed in our latest blog post.
