Fear of God Essentials collaborates with Major League Baseball (MLB) before All-Star Week in Atlanta, Georgia, to pay tribute to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Renowned Georgia-born rapper 2 Chainz serves as the face of the campaign. This initiative not only acknowledges Atlanta’s sports teams from the MLB, NBA, and NFL, but also highlights its impact on Rap music and the Civil Rights movement.
As reported by WWD, the Atlanta Capsule brings together established figures in the industry, with caps produced alongside New Era, sweatshirts designed by Franklin Sports, and batting gloves developed by both brands. This collection highlights Atlanta’s major sports teams: the Braves (MLB), Falcons (NFL), and Hawks (NBA). Additionally, it honors historical leagues from the racially segregated era in the US, such as the “Negro Southern League” and the “Negro American League,” including notable teams like the Monarchs, Black Crackers, Black Yankees, Grays, and X-Giants.
The visuals convey a potent and resounding political message, drawing upon slogans and signs from the Black Liberation movement in Atlanta during the 1960s. Phrases such as “We Won’t Move” and “Freedom Now” are included alongside others, with one graphic stating “Don’t shop where you aren’t employed,” mirroring the many consumer boycotts of that time. This message is strikingly applicable today, given its ongoing relevance in targeting retailers who have weakened their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and affirmative action efforts.
1996 saw Atlanta playing host to the Summer Olympics, cementing its reputation as a significant sports hub in America. Beyond sports, the city has evolved into a vibrant center for African-American arts and music, attracting some of the world’s most famous rappers such as 21 Savage, Andre 3000, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, and 2 Chainz, to name a few. The Fear of God x MLB collection acknowledges and celebrates these thriving cultural scenes while paying tribute to the enduring struggle faced by African-American communities throughout history.
The Atlanta Capsule is set to debut only at The Webster in Lenox Square this coming Friday. Afterward, you can also find it on the Fear of God web store.
