Ed Helms admits that he was extremely anxious when his “traditionally conservative” parents watched the movie “The Hangover” in 2009.
The performer has been featured on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast from SiriusXM, reminiscing about the R-rated comedy he starred in alongside Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis.
Growing up, I was from a somewhat restrictive household in the South. Although we held liberal political views, socially we were quite traditional. So, the idea of being in a film like ‘The Hangover’ – which is absolutely wild – wasn’t something my parents had prepared me for.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler and more conversational language.)
At that time, they had witnessed my antics on shows like The Daily Show and The Office. While there was already some level of acceptance, I was still anxious when they were going to watch The Hangover. This film was released when I was 35 years old, and even now, I’m still uneasy about what my parents think.” He added humorously.
The film titled “The Hangover“, directed by Todd Phillips, narrates the story of three companions who discover themselves disoriented after a bachelor party in Las Vegas, having no recollection of the previous night and the groom-to-be nowhere to be found. In order to reach the wedding on time, they embark on a journey through the city in search of their friend.
Even though he was quite nervous, Helms admitted that he had taken his parents to the movie’s opening night. Yet, their response, surprisingly, left him taken aback.
He remembered a time when he saw his mother crying, the room became brightly lit. Tears were streaming down her face, and for a brief moment, he felt like he might have hurt his dear mom. But then she said it was hilarious, gave him a big hug, and that moment has been etched in his memory as one of those very special ones.”
This version aims to maintain the original’s tone while making it easier for readers to understand and follow the sequence of events.
Helms expressed, “The release of ‘The Hangover’ was an incredibly significant milestone in my career, in my personal life, and having my mother fully support me through it all was truly heartwarming.
The 2009 film, classified as a comedy, ended up being extremely profitable, raking in over $277 million at the theater. Additionally, it led to two follow-ups, titled “The Hangover Part II” and “The Hangover Part III“.
Earlier, Helms expressed his willingness to once again play Stu in a potential fourth film of the series to People magazine.
In 2023, he expressed that working with his costars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and director Todd Phillips is a dream come true for him. He went on to say that he would gladly participate in any project with them because they are among his favorite people in the world. In essence, he exclaimed, ‘I’d do anything with those guys!’
