Ever since the premiere of the first Superman movie, I’ve found myself pondering when we might get to see the sequel. As of now, details about it are still scarce. However, I do know that the original movie had its grand debut at the Los Angeles TCL Chinese Theatre on July 7, 2025, and is slated for a theater release on July 11. James Gunn, who’s renowned for his work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films and The Suicide Squad, has been leading the project at DC Studios as co-CEO.
So, when is Superman 2 coming out? Here’s the film’s possible release date explored.
What is the Superman 2 release date estimate?
The projected launch date for Superman 2 could be either 2028 or 2029, given that this schedule is generally adhered to in the production of most superhero movies.
Typically, sequels of superhero movies are premiered in cinemas about two to three years following the initial release. To illustrate, the first X-Men film, which came out in 2000, was followed by X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, released in 2003 and 2006 respectively. Similarly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy debuted with Homecoming in 2017, and its sequels Far From Home and No Way Home were premiered in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
Given this pattern, it’s even more plausible that the mentioned years of 2028 and 2029 will indeed be when Superman 2 is released.
In addition, although James Gunn hasn’t formally declared a Superman sequel yet, he hinted in a recent Entertainment Weekly chat that he is indeed working on a continuation. However, he stressed that this potential movie might deviate from the conventional path of a sequel.
