In my opinion, among Superman’s formidable adversaries, none posed a greater threat than Ultraman, a genetically engineered replica, who, much like Kal-El, wields identical powers. Interestingly, the first DC Universe movie deviated significantly from the comics, and the introduction of Ultraman was one such departure.
But who was this villainous character? Here is how the DCU’s Ultraman came to be.
Here’s how Lex Luthor created Superman’s clone, Ultraman
In the comics, Ultraman is a counterpart of Superman from an alternate universe called Earth-3. Contrary to what the movie suggests, Kal-El’s mission was to conquer Earth, but in the comics, his counterpart, Ultraman, carried out that task. However, the Clark Kent fans are familiar with him not taking this path.
In the film, it was fascinating to discover that I wasn’t just rooting for a superhero, but a character with an intriguing backstory. As it turns out, Ultraman was crafted by Lex Luthor, using a lock of Superman’s hair! This means Ultraman is essentially a genetic clone of my favorite hero, brought to life through advanced genetic engineering and pilfered Kryptonian DNA.
This being is manipulated by Luthor through command codes, displaying minimal autonomy, much like the character Bizarro from the comics. There are striking similarities with Connor Kent, who shares a similar origin tale. However, unlike either of these characters, this DCU villain has been given an entirely fresh history and traits for its role in the storyline.
Although the precise way Lex Luthor crafted Ultraman remained undisclosed, it’s known that he nurtured him as an embodiment of everything Superman is not, according to ScreenCrush.
Remarkably, the film doesn’t straight-up eliminate Ultraman. Instead, a black hole from another dimension pulls him in, implying he might live on to face greater adventures down the line. As of now, we don’t know whether he’s alive or not.
Simultaneously, these fresh elements and outstanding narrative have paved a strong path for Superman, potentially ushering in a new epoch for DC. Now, Superman is gracing screens worldwide.
