James Gunn‘s Superman has taken flight at the box office.
The eagerly awaited blockbuster film featuring our favorite superhero, produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros., raked in a whopping $22.5 million during its Thursday previews and special screenings in North America. This figure marks the highest preview earnings for any film so far this year.
The movie’s debut is projected at $130 million domestically, according to tracking, but DC Studios has taken a cautious approach by predicting earnings of over $100 million. The buzz surrounding the film is immense – so much so that it led President Donald Trump to share a meme on social media portraying himself as the latest incarnation of Superman.
In a distinctive role, Gunn serves as both writer and director of this film, along with co-heading the DC Studios, which are owned by Warner Bros. This gives him significant influence in shaping the movie’s narrative. Meanwhile, we anticipate that ‘Superman’ will generate over $100 million in its opening weekend across 78 international markets.
In 2016, the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” directed by Zack Snyder smashed records for a Clark Kent/Superman film with an unadjusted domestic opening of $166 million. This surpassed the initial domestic earnings of Snyder’s 2013 film “Man of Steel,” which was $116 million. Nearly two decades ago, Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” recorded a six-day North American opening of over $84 million.
It’s no surprise that Gunn and his DC Studios co-head, Peter Safran, feel uneasy about the unpredictable nature of box office performance (tracking) given its inconsistency in recent times.
In this new version of Superman, David Corenswet takes on the role of the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the shoes of Lex Luthor. Joining them are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced bringing Hawkgirl to life, Beck Bennett playing Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
Or, in a slightly different way:
In the upcoming Superman storyline, we have David Corenswet assuming the role of the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan stepping into Lois Lane’s shoes, and Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor. The talented cast is completed by Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced bringing Hawkgirl to life on screen, Beck Bennett playing Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillion taking on the role of Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan embodying Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi portraying Mister Terrific.
The movie signifies Gunn’s debut in a DC film, as he assumed control over Warner Bros’ superhero division alongside Safran in November 2022. Other projects from DC Studios include the HBO series titled “Lanterns” based on Green Lantern, and a Supergirl movie scheduled for release in 2026.
