Initially, I didn’t expect the revival of Matlock on the 2025 TV schedule to cause much speculation. However, today’s announcement of CBS’s Fall 2025-2026 premiere lineup has proven me wrong, as it turns out that the acclaimed Kathy Bates dramedy will air in October. This development is quite unexpected since Matlock had a long hiatus following its initial series debut, but it seems we won’t be facing such a wait for Season 2. In fact, we’re looking at an earlier start than expected. I can’t help but wonder what secrets lie beneath this early twist in the schedule?
Matlock’s Season 2 Premiere Strategy Is Literally Its First Twist
After the thrilling Season 1 finale of Matlock, this upcoming development is being promoted as a surprise by CBS. As we received an email revealing the return dates for shows like NCIS and fresh entries such as DMV, a social media post hyped up the October 12th premiere date, together with this “surprise”: a twist in the programming schedule.

It seems like there are two episodes scheduled for one week apart in this new season of Matlock on Paramount+. The first one is set for Sunday, October 12, and the second one will air four days later on Thursday, October 16. This quick succession of episodes might be a change from how I recall the original series taking two-week breaks between selected episodes. Given that the suspense created by Kathy Bates’ initial twist was built over this interval, its absence in Season 2’s premiere may not sit well with fans who are used to that anticipation.
Certainly, I can help with that! “Indeed, the storytelling device turned out to be beneficial for the show, as the early renewal and strong viewership numbers demonstrated. Although I don’t intend to channel Matlock here, my question following this decision is undeniably influenced by these events.

What Are They Trying To Hide With Matlock’s Two-Episode Kickoff?
When I noticed an ad featuring two episodes airing in the same week, my thoughts immediately went to a quote from the cunning Baron Harkonnen in Dune: “When is a gift not a gift?” Now, I’m not implying that Matty will dispatch an assassin to target Julian Markston (Jason Ritter) after his revelation as a Wellbrexa accomplice. However, Matlock’s unexpected double reveal has certainly sparked my curiosity and left me delightfully suspicious.
I hope there will be an unexpected twist similar to discovering that Matty Matlock was actually Madeline Kingston coming up soon. It would likely take more than one episode for this reveal, I suspect. This feels like a deep mystery, and to solve it, we may need to revisit the questions from the Season 1 finale of Matlock.

What Season 2 Questions Will Matlock’s Premiere Address?
In the grand finale of “Tricks of the Trade,” there were several plates in motion. Among them, two stood out as intriguing storylines for the start of Season 2. Initially, it appears that the upcoming Sunday episode will delve into the dilemma facing Olympia (played by Skye P. Marshall) regarding Julian and her next move.
Despite the fragile state of her friendship with Matty following Matlock’s Season 1 penultimate episode, it wasn’t an easy choice to send Matty’s father to jail. However, this complex situation might be further explored in the second episode airing on Thursday, October 16th. The first episode back, meanwhile, could focus on Matty’s encounter with the man claimed to be Alfie’s (Aaron Harris) biological father.

It seems to me that I might have uncovered the reason for having two episodes of Matlock in a week, but I wouldn’t stake my partnership at Jacobson Moore on it. One thing we should never forget from Season 1 is that we can’t always predict where things will lead next.
Countdown’s on, folks! I can hardly wait till October 12th at 9:30 PM ET when Kathy Bates and the gang grace our screens again! Following that special airing, we’ll be back to our usual Thursday slot at 9 PM ET. And if you have any burning questions for them, don’t forget to drop a letter at CBS!
