Over the weekend, Richard Dreyfuss had to unfortunately withdraw from a scheduled fan gathering due to contracting viral bronchitis.
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled to learn that the legendary star of “Jaws” was set to grace SharkCon, an exciting event brought to us by National Geographic, which unfolded this past weekend at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo in Tampa. I eagerly anticipated his participation in photo opportunities and autograph signings during the event.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join this year’s SharkCon event as I shared on the SharkCon Instagram page from my hospital bed.
Greetings, friends! I regret to inform you that I’ve been diagnosed with a viral infection – specifically, viral bronchitis. This is Svetlana Erokhin speaking from off-camera as I briefly step away to share this news with you.
He shared that his doctors have advised him against flying due to his current health condition, as the destination is five hours away by air. He expressed regret because he had wanted to attend and was eagerly anticipating it. Unfortunately, he can’t make it due to his circumstances. He doesn’t want to put anyone else at risk or worsen his own condition. He feels terrible about missing out, and he would feel even worse about potentially infecting others with this apparently highly contagious illness. However, there will be other opportunities, and he promises to make an effort to attend in the future.
He ended with a positive message to the fans.
He expressed his wishes by saying, “I hope you all have great success and joy,” followed by a chuckle, “And I hope you all will feel quite sympathetic towards me.
He went on saying, ‘I’m truly sorry, but right now, I’m experiencing a great deal of discomfort. My wellbeing must take priority – it’s crucial. And I’m glad to have the opportunity to rest and recover with good health.’
Then, his wife added: “What wonderful supporters! We adore you. It’s been a while since we’ve seen you all, but we’ll be reunited soon.
“She’s right,” Dreyfuss said. (Watch the video below.)
In their post, SharkCon announced that those who bought “pre-purchased autographs and photo sessions” will receive an automatic refund.
The event’s website indicated that the attendees of SharkCon 2025 were set to include actors from the Jaws series, such as Jeffrey Voorhees from the original film, Jonathan and Steven Searle and Carla Hogendyk, who were also in the first movie; John Dukakis and G. Thomas Dunlop, who starred in Jaws 2; and actors John Putch, Jackie Kuntarich Cook, and Liz Smith, who appeared in Jaws 3-D.
On August 29, the classic film “Jaws,” directed by Steven Spielberg, will be re-released for its 50th anniversary at AMC Theaters.
