As the final Sundance Film Festival in Park City approaches in six months, its director and head of public programming, Eugene Hernandez, is hinting at some strategies for 2026.
As I pen this letter about next year’s edition of our beloved festival, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of anticipation. This upcoming event in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, from January 22nd to February 1st, holds immense significance for so many reasons. It’s not just the last festival we’ll host here in Utah before our move to Boulder, Colorado in 2027; it’s a chance for us to craft an experience that will be etched in memories, a celebration brimming with gratitude and joy.
Hernandez mentioned that they intend to express gratitude towards the entire Utah community, considering that the state has been hosting Sundance Institute’s festival for forty years. To celebrate this milestone, there will be unique screenings, discussions about the legacy, and various other events scheduled.
88-year-old Robert Redford, founder of Sundance, who hasn’t been seen much at the festival lately, is set to receive a special honor in January. Although no definite details were given, Hernandez mentioned that Redford’s influence will be highlighted during the institute’s annual charity event at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley on the 23rd of January. Moreover, he will be honored through “special instances” throughout the festival period.
The upcoming festival next year is set to showcase over 90 full-length films and more than 50 short films, along with the Beyond Film series that includes discussions and events. The specific lineup will be revealed at a later date. Moreover, Hernandez hinted at plans to express appreciation towards Park City by screening archival footage, restored movies, and unique events. Similar to last year, Main Street will remain pedestrian-friendly. As for the venue details, both the Yarrow Theatre in Park City and the Broadway Centre Cinemas and Rose Wagner Performing Arts Centre in Salt Lake City will be utilized.
Hernandez concluded the letter by expressing that the 2026 Sundance Film Festival will provide another opportunity for us to contribute to our ongoing narrative. I eagerly anticipate reuniting in Park City and Salt Lake City with everyone in January next year, as we come together to honor independent storytelling from the past, present, and future.
