Visual effects workers employed by Saturday Night Live have ratified their first union contract.
On Monday, the IATSE union, which comprises all eligible members from their newly established group, collectively approved a deal reached by negotiators back in May. The labor union made this announcement after a swift round of negotiations that started in April and wrapped up before the final episode of the long-running sketch comedy show on May 17th.
The team of IATSE workers is responsible for creating visual effects in the prerecorded segments of the show, such as “Goth Kid on Vacation” starring Jack Black and “Walton Goggins in Boss’s Bathroom.
Hannah S. Kim, our main union representative, shared her enthusiasm about becoming part of the significant union community at SNL. She also expressed hope that this move would motivate other VFX and animation industries nationwide to do the same.
In simpler terms, the union’s overview of the agreement was vague about details, but it highlighted key points such as setting minimum wage rates, providing ongoing healthcare benefits, and contributing towards annuities. Additionally, it introduces “termination fees” for employees hired for projects that get canceled before completion. The agreement also addresses the use of AI in the work environment, outsourcing matters, and has a complaint resolution process built into it.
In October 2024, it was announced that the visual effects workers’ union had been voluntarily acknowledged. This union was advocating for “equal pay” and “reliable health care,” highlighting their challenging and hectic work schedules leading up to each week’s production.
For several years now, IATSE has been setting up teams of visual effects workers. Besides SNL, the union has also established bargaining agreements at Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Pictures (a subsidiary involved in Avatar film production), and Apple TV as of 2023.
