I’m thrilled to share that the second season of Apple TV+’s “Severance” has made history, bagging an impressive 27 Emmy Award nominations! It’s a remarkable feat and the most nominations any show has received this year, but it falls short of breaking the all-time record for a drama series. Back in 2019, “Game of Thrones” stole the spotlight with an astounding 32 Emmy nods – a title hard to beat, even when you’re up against dragons!
Ben Stiller and Jessica Lee Gagné), Picture Editing (three times), Title Design, Music Composition, Music Supervision, Lead Actor (Adam Scott), Lead Actress (Britt Lower), Supporting Actor (Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro – all three nominations), Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette), Guest Actress (Jane Alexander, Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Wever – all three nominations), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Special Effects, and Stunt Performance. Notably, Jessica Lee Gagné made history as the first woman to receive nominations for both Best Cinematography and Best Directing in a Drama Series.
May the best prevail in all categories, but particularly for those in competition. If Tillman (and Cherry as well) doesn’t draw votes away, Turturro stands a good chance of winning their category. Interestingly enough, Turturro might justifiably win due to his unique delivery of Mr. Milchick’s (Tillman) name – “Do it, Seth.” I won’t argue strongly for Wever over Christie; let’s simply say goats have a tendency to bite!
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making the text sound more conversational and less formal.
The number of nominations for this year (27) is almost double the number received by “Severance” during its first season (14), back in 2022. During that time, “Severance” was nominated for 14 Emmys and managed to win only two: one for best music composition and another for Arquette’s exceptional performance as best supporting actress in a drama series.
It’s a privilege to be nominated, indeed, but it’s an even greater honor to emerge victorious. In my less-than-modest view, the first season of “Severance” was deserving of many more awards, such as the title for best drama series. Additionally, it seems Tillman, who wasn’t even nominated, might have been a strong contender for supporting actor.
As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that when it comes to captivating television shows, nothing quite compares to the enchantment of “Severance.” Critics might be giving both seasons of “Succession” similar marks, but they’re missing out on the magical allure of Lumen. It’s been a long time since “Lost” had fans buzzing with theories and speculations, but “Severance” has stepped up to fill that void, even before J.J. Abrams and Carlton Cuse allegedly had to alter their course due to the influence of message boards, which ultimately led to an ending that left many viewers unsatisfied.
To set the record straight, I found “Severance” season two to be outstanding, even superior in many ways — but it was outshined by season one which was nothing short of groundbreaking. Regrettably, this groundbreaking moment clashed with the final season of HBO’s “Succession.” In most years and against most shows, “Succession” season four would have been the undisputed winner without a second thought. However, 2022 was the year that belonged to “Severance,” or at least it should have — a unique, innovative, and downright crazy new series from Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller. The voters were captivated by Jesse Armstrong wrapping up another outstanding drama of the past seven years, or perhaps it’s just human nature to honor greatness as it fades away instead of during its peak. If you doubt me, the only year “Succession” did not win the Best Drama Emmy Award was its own inaugural season — it lost to HBO’s “Game of Thrones” in its final season. The eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones,” however, was not among its finest moments.
This morning’s 27 nominations for “Severance” feels like both a well-deserved recognition for a remarkable second season and an apology for overlooking its brilliant first season by the Television Academy. The celebration, though belated by one TV season and three calendar years, will be in full swing on September 14 when awards are presented. If the delay in recognition gives your brain a headache like it’s giving mine, simply tune out the part that causes discomfort and enjoy the blissful ignorance for a while!
