Jason Blum Pranked The Black Phone Director with a Literal Black Phone in His Basement

In the year 2018, as the devastating Woolsey Fire swept through Los Angeles, Scott Derrickson, the writer, director, and producer of “The Black Phone” (currently streaming on Peacock), unfortunately had his home and belongings destroyed in the fire that razed more than 12,000 structures.

The filmmaker previously mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that they were thankful for their excellent fire insurance, as it didn’t cause a severe financial burden unlike those with poor coverage or no insurance at all. Speaking from a place of empathy, they acknowledged that such a predicament could be catastrophic, devastating, and simply unimaginable. Their sympathies primarily lie with those who find themselves in this difficult position.

Following temporary stays at a hotel and later at a residence belonging to actor Kevin Sorbo, the Derrickson family eventually discovered their eternal dwelling, but it held an ominous mystery seeded by Jason Blum, the producer of The Black Phone and CEO of Blumhouse Productions.

During an interview with ScreenRant, the director shared an eerie experience from his first night in his new house: a mysterious phone in the basement mysteriously rang. With a sense of dread, he descended the stairs, illuminated by a flashlight, to find a black phone installed in the basement. To his surprise, it was Jason Blum who was on the other end when he answered. The phone was set up to dial Blum’s cell number whenever picked up. The director added that this prank, which still remains in the house, is something he will never part with.

Later on, I shared this: “Whenever it sounds, I always answer. It’s sounded a few times, yet each ring-up has always been empty. Quite eerie, if you ask me.

Drawing inspiration from Joe Hill’s short story of the same title, “The Black Phone” unfolds the harrowing tale of Finney Blake (Mason Thames), a young man who is kidnapped and imprisoned in the basement of a sinister abductor called the “Grabber” (Ethan Hawke). With his life hanging in the balance, Finney finds hope in an antique black telephone that allows him to connect with the Grabber’s past victims.

A sequel for the film was greenlit in November, 2023.
