The captivating tale of Outlander is preparing to conclude the love narrative between Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in its eighth and final season. Their loyalty has traversed centuries, battles, and heartaches, leaving many unanswered questions. Eager fans won’t have to wait long to revisit this world of time-traveling romance, as the 2025 TV schedule brings a new installment – the prequel spinoff titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Spinoff showrunner Matthew B. Roberts recently shared insights on extending beyond the narrative of Diana Gabaldon’s novel series and why the author endorsed the alterations.
Matthew B. Roberts served as an executive producer on the hit series “Outlander” since its debut, and things are looking promising for the upcoming spin-off, “Blood of My Blood,” following the early Season 2 renewal of the drama. During an interview with SFX Magazine via TopMob, Roberts revealed that “Blood of My Blood” is the origin story of Claire and Jamie’s parents, complete with a time travel twist that even Claire herself wasn’t aware of in both the show and the books. According to Claire, her parents had perished in a car accident when she was quite young. However, it appears that her memory may have been mistaken based on the trailer for the series. Roberts explained:
Initially, I asked, ‘What if they hadn’t perished in the car accident?’ This thought sparked the development of the prequel in everyone’s imagination. What makes Outlander captivating is its exploration of time travel, a theme that runs consistently through every episode and book. Even when Claire reappears in the books and remains [in the past], there are still numerous instances of time travel involving other family members.
In essence, “Blood of My Blood” doesn’t exactly alter Claire’s backstory from Starz’s “Outlander” or Diana Gabaldon’s books. While fans might assume that Claire’s parents passed away in a car accident based on her recounting, it’s important to note that Claire was unaware of the entire story surrounding Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) before she was born. Furthermore, traditional narrative guidelines may not strictly apply when time travel is a factor.
One method of rephrasing in a clear and natural manner is as follows: Discussing ways to prolong the Outlander series beyond its eighth and final season can be straightforward, but what about the original author? Over nine books (and still counting) spanning over three decades, Diana Gabaldon has built a consistent narrative. Matthew B. Roberts recounted her response to his proposal for a prequel.
As a devoted cinephile, I had already mapped out every location I desired for our story, making it effortless to guide Diana through these spots as we crafted our characters’ journey. The moment I presented her with Henry and Julia, she was instantly hooked and fully committed from the get-go.
In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself deeply immersed in the Outlander production process, even peeking over Gabaldon’s shoulder unnoticed at times. However, it wasn’t until recently that I felt compelled to share the extent of my involvement. To put it simply, I penned the penultimate episode of Season 1.
Throughout our journey, she had a clear understanding of our destination all along. There was no need for me to consult her about which route to take, such as “Can I go left or right?” She was familiar with my desired destination since the start, and she remained comfortable because in her perspective, books and television shows are separate entities. While some viewers might not share this view, she does, and so do we.
The new season of Outlander, titled ‘Blood of My Blood,’ will air this Friday, August 8th at 8 p.m. ET on Starz. Interestingly, the premiere lands almost eleven years to the day since Outlander initially premiered in 2014, bringing Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan’s renditions of Diana Gabaldon’s cherished book characters into our world.
