Bungie anticipated that Edge of Fate would pave the way for a daring, fresh chapter in Destiny 2. However, it seems like this could lead to something quite different.
This development initiates the “Prophetic Year” following the conclusion of the lengthy Light vs. Darkness tale, introducing fresh settings, characters, and gaming elements in the process.
To numerous participants, this debut seems less about a new beginning and more like an elusive opportunity slowly slipping away.
Is The Edge of Fate The Worst Destiny 2 Launch?
On its debut day, the number of simultaneous players for Steam’s Edge of Fate peaked at a relatively low 99,193, marking the smallest expansion launch since Destiny 2 transitioned to being free-to-play in 2019.
Previously released expansions like The Final Shape and Lightfall saw approximately 300,000 and 240,000 players respectively joining the game on their first day. This shows a strong interest in the game even for smaller expansions such as Beyond Light.
The game “Edge of Fate” failed to surpass six thousand sales on Steam. However, it’s important to note that these numbers exclude console sales. Historically, Steam’s sales trends have mirrored the overall growth of this franchise.
A significant decrease may indicate underlying factors like franchise exhaustion, doubt about the content, or perhaps waning enthusiasm due to the emotional ending of the series.
Did The Final Shape Signal the Right Time to Leave?
Given that the tale in The Final Shape has come to an end, many players find this conclusion fitting and logical.

Feedback suggests that players find little incentive to continue with Edge of Fate, as indicated by a decline in player numbers. It’s not just about the number of players; the overall experience seems lackluster. Some devoted fans were unaware that an expansion had been released until popular streamers started playing it.
The design of the expansion hasn’t managed to address the lack of enthusiasm, unfortunately. The expansion titled Edge of Fate introduces a new destination, Kepler, brimming with mysteries and Metroidvania-style exploration. On paper, it seems intriguing; however, gamers find its application tedious and monotonous.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself frequently using the Matterspark – a tool powered by Arc technology, designed for navigating tight spaces and solving puzzles. However, it seems that this device has been met with some criticism. People claim it’s overused, tricky to handle, and can even induce motion sickness at times. To me, it feels more like a gimmick than something empowering in gameplay.
Why Is the Gameplay Loop Driving People Away?
The expansion tries to make some mechanics easier, but ends up causing more frustration.

The Portal system, initially designed to simplify the process of choosing tasks and monitoring their progress, has unfortunately received criticism for being cumbersome, limiting, and lacking emotional connection.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed that some activities have been moved to a rotating schedule, making them harder to find and enjoy. This includes the much-loved PvP modes in the Crucible, which seem to be hidden or shuffled around. To add to the disappointment, several beloved features have either been removed without notice or given less prominence.
Nowadays, it’s simpler to advance in Guardian Ranks, but this ease has left some players feeling that the achievement is insignificant. The struggle for gear, however, has become more challenging than ever before. With the recent adjustments in stats and introduction of new power benchmarks, older weapons are less effective in high-tier content, making them less desirable.
Veterans, who spent years mastering the art of building, find themselves back at square one, as they must rebuild their structures anew. The tower merchants, regrettably, are no longer helpful resources, instead functioning primarily as repositories for obsolete content that has lost its relevance.
Currently, players find themselves frustrated as some user interface elements and fundamental features such as previews for item effects have been taken away. Though the appearance might be improved, functionality-wise, it seems we’ve taken a step back from where we were before.
Are Players Getting Enough Content for the Price?
The Edge of Fate expansion seems to offer fewer benefits compared to previous ones, as it lacks fresh Strikes, doesn’t introduce any new Crucible maps, and features a compact, often redundant storyline with goals that are relatively straightforward and protracted.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed with this latest expansion. Despite the intriguing new lore and characters, it seems like there’s an excess of filler content. The upcoming raid, Desert Perpetual, has sparked some hope among us, but that optimism is starting to wane.
It’s widely speculated among online enthusiasts that Edge of Fate might be facing challenges, possibly fueling concerns about Bungie’s future direction. All eyes are on Renegades, the upcoming expansion slated for release in December 2025.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I think about the grandeur of Bungie’s games, particularly the Star Wars theme that once captivated us all. The idea of a cinematic revival holds immense promise, yet it seems like we’ve lost something along the way.
But let’s be real, life in the gaming world isn’t always smooth sailing. With layoffs happening, players feeling drained from constant gameplay, and controversy swirling around recent updates, Bungie’s margin for error is thinner than a lightsaber’s blade these days. It’s a challenging time, no doubt, but I’m keeping my faith alive that they can turn things around.
With Edge of Fate serving as the precursor to the Year of Prophecy, people are now pondering: What exactly is this prophecy? And who remains to witness its realization?
