After almost five years of development, the live-action Assassin’s Creed series on Netflix has officially been given the go-ahead. Roberto Patino, known for Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, as well as David Wiener from Halo and The Killing, will be taking charge as creators, showrunners, and executive producers, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
The globally successful “Assassin’s Creed” video game series, developed by the French company Ubisoft, initially debuted in 2007. To date, these games have sold over 230 million units globally.
In 2016, the video game Assassin’s Creed transitioned from gaming consoles to cinemas through Twentieth Century Fox. The film adaptation grossed approximately $240 million globally at the box office.
The Netflix show, ‘Assassin’s Creed’, is a fast-paced thriller revolving around a clandestine conflict between two mysterious groups. One group aims to dictate mankind’s fate through power and manipulation, while the other champions freedom. The story follows its characters throughout significant historical periods as they struggle to influence humanity’s destiny.
The Assassin’s Creed TV series is similar to other video game adaptations on Netflix, such as Castlevania, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the forthcoming Splinter Cell: Deathwatch.
We’ve loved Assassin’s Creed ever since it debuted in 2007. Each day we spend on this project leaves us feeling energized and awestruck by the creative potential that Assassin’s Creed offers. Beyond its vast scale, action sequences, and parkour, lies a foundation for the most fundamental human narratives – tales about individuals seeking meaning, grappling with questions of self, fate, and faith. It delves into themes like power, aggression, love, greed, vengeance, and more.”
– Wiener and Patino in their joint statement.
Above all else, this series emphasizes the importance of human relationships that span cultures and eras. It underscores the devastating consequences when these bonds are severed. We’re fortunate to have a fantastic team working with us from Ubisoft and Netflix, and we’re dedicated to producing an unforgettable experience for viewers worldwide.
In a statement, Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of scripted series, shared that when they initially partnered with Ubisoft in 2020, their aim was to bring the vast, intricate universe of Assassin’s Creed to life in innovative ways. After years of diligent cooperation, it’s truly inspiring to witness how far this vision has progressed. Under the skillful direction of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has meticulously designed an epic journey that not only upholds the prestigious legacy of the Assassin’s Creed franchise but also invites both dedicated fans and newcomers to immerse themselves in the Brotherhood’s exhilaration like never before.
Alongside Wiener and Patino, other executive producers working on the streaming show are Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill (from Ubisoft Film & Television), and Matt O’Toole.
Boykin, the executive producer and head of content at Ubisoft Film & Television, is thrilled to collaborate with Roberto, David, and our Netflix associates in turning this cherished series into a reality. We can’t wait to create an experience that resonates with what fans adore about Assassin’s Creed, all while showcasing its iconic settings and enduring themes to global audiences who are yet to discover them.
