Imagine Paramount Plus without Taylor Sheridan. It’s not easy if you try.
The platform of the streamer does not host shows such as “Special Ops: Lioness,” “Tulsa King,” “1923,” “1883,” “Yellowstone” or “Landman.
The latter gave Billy Bob Thornton his best showcase in ages.
Despite being a highly successful television author/creator who consistently attracts massive viewership, this individual often fails to receive the Emmy Awards recognition he deserves.
This week’s Emmy award nominations excluded Sheridan’s shows from all major categories.
Again.
As a film enthusiast, I must say that the second season of “Tulsa King” seemed to resonate strongly with many viewers, while falling short on poetic depth for some. The last few episodes of “Yellowstone” left a few fans feeling less than satisfied. Nevertheless, both shows continue to maintain their significant presence in the TV world. In particular, Woody Harrelson’s exceptional performance in “Landman” certainly merits serious award consideration.
For the script of that play, there’s a wealth of material that experienced actors like Gary Sinise (Thornton), Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore can sink their teeth into.
Apparently not.
It’s also been acknowledged by traditional media outlets, even CNN on the left, that there was a snub regarding Sheridan’s work, as they pointed out the absence of Emmy recognition for him. Similarly, The Hollywood Reporter brought attention to this oversight too.
Taylor Sheridan’s 6 Shows Were Snubbed: Why Do Emmy Voters Hate His Dramas?
THR pointed out the proverbial elephant in the Republican party, while Sheridan’s work showcases perspectives that extend beyond the coastal elite of our nation.
Sheridan is recognized for creating dramas that resonate with America’s heartland, while many of the nominated shows are more appealing to coastal cities and urban areas (like The Studio, Hacks, The Bear, and Severance). Labeling Sheridan’s works as “Red State” oversimplifies their complexity, as his characters often have strong pro-environmental views. However, some of Sheridan’s political ideas are conveyed through his lead characters in memorable scenes that reinforce the conservative image of his dramas (such as John Dutton’s speech to a vegan protestor in Yellowstone or Tommy Norris, the oil company fixer, criticizing green energy initiatives).
Sheridan’s shows stand out because they avoid being ideologically confined. He doesn’t show allegiance to either the MAGA movement or the Bernie Bros, as some might assume from his storytelling balance. However, in interviews, he has not publicly endorsed the Republican party.
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
He doesn’t like being categorized as a conservative, showing the wide range of his works instead. However, it’s worth mentioning that he had a conversation with the unconventional podcaster Joe Rogan, an action that might have angered the Emmy award voters.
The proof is in the results, no?
Away from the usual glitz of Hollywood, Sheridan prefers a simple life. Rather than dwelling in LA’s bustling environment, he resides on a vast ranch in Texas, distanced from its ecosystem. He may not align himself with traditional political groups, and he certainly doesn’t make a show of it to his fellow celebrities.
The Sheridan method recognizes all of America, not merely the progressive mindset of some groups. This is likely the reason for his continued success as he moved from a humble acting background into a full-time career as a writer and producer.
As a cinephile, I spot unique narrative perspectives that often escape my fellow film enthusiasts. This sets me apart and offers me an advantage in the cut-throat realm of Tinseltown, where such insights can make all the difference.
It’s a shame Emmy voters appear too blinded by emotion and/or prejudice to notice.
