On Friday, the Venice Film Festival presented the panel of experts who will determine this year’s Golden Lion winner for best film at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The jury consists of esteemed film professionals and includes Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, French filmmaker Stéphane Brizé, Italian filmmaker Maura Delpero, Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, and Chinese actress Zhao Tao. All six will participate in the main jury.
Previously announced, the esteemed two-time Oscar-winning director, Alexander Payne (known for “The Holdovers”, “Sideways”, and “Nebraska”), has been appointed to lead the jury as its president. Interestingly, Payne has only presented one film in the Venice competition before; his work, “Downsizing”, made its debut on the Lido back in 2017.
Apart from presenting the top movie with the Golden Lion award, the competition jury also awards several other prestigious prizes. These include the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize, Silver Lions for outstanding direction, the Coppa Volpi for exceptional acting performances (both male and female), the festival’s Best Screenplay Award, a Special Jury Prize, and the Marcello Mastroianni Award, which honors promising young actors or actresses in memory of the late Italian film legend.
On Friday, it was announced that French director and screenwriter Julia Ducournau will lead the Horizons (Orrizonti) jury at Venice. Accompanying her are Yuri Ancarani, an Italian director and video artist, Fernando Enrique Juan Lima from Argentina who is a film critic, Shannon Murphy, a director from Australia, and U.S.-based artist and filmmaker RaMell Ross.
The “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film jury, led by Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells, will additionally comprise French-Tunisian director and producer Erige Sehiri, as well as Italian director and screenwriter Silvio Soldini.
The 82nd Venice festival runs Aug. 27-Sept. 6.
