Tina Fey, Marc Platt Team for ‘John Proctor Is the Villain’ Movie at Universal (Exclusive)

The acclaimed Broadway musical “John Proctor Is the Villain” is being adapted for the silver screen by the hands of Tina Fey and Marc Platt.

In a cutthroat scenario, Universal secured the movie rights for the stage play. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd (often referred to as Platt) are set to produce the film. The screenplay will be penned by Kimberly Belflower, the original playwright, while Sadie Sink, who was nominated for a Tony Award due to her role in the show, will serve as an executive producer.

In a small rural town in Georgia, a cluster of high school girls delve into Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and establish a feminist club to navigate their personal experiences within the broader context of the #MeToo movement. As they explore their relationships with male figures such as classmates, teachers, and parents in their community, they grapple with understanding their roles and standing up for themselves. In this narrative, John Proctor is portrayed as a central character embodying certain antagonistic qualities.

At its heart, Belflower presents a moving tale about girlhood and strong friendships, as noted in The Hollywood Reporter‘s review. This production, garnering seven Tony nominations including best play, has amassed over $10 million and will continue until August 31st.

Fey and Eric Gurian are set to produce their project under Little Stranger, Inc., which is based at Universal. Meanwhile, Platt, who has produced the two-part Wicked film series, will produce alongside Adam Siegel and Jared LeBoff through his own production company, Marc Platt Productions, also based at Universal. The project will be overseen by Britt Hennemuth in the areas of production development and special projects for the studio.

Fey is managed by WME, 3 Arts, and Ziffren. Similarly, Belflower, who works with WME, Untitled, and Goodman Genow, has produced plays titled “Lost Girl” and “Saint Pigtail”. Sink, who’s set to appear in the final season of Netflix show “Stranger Things”, is managed by WME, Mara Entertainment, and Peikoff Mahan.
