John Oliver is calling the cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert “incredibly sad.”
Over the weekend, while conversing with journalists, Oliver was questioned about the recent news that CBS disclosed unexpectedly on Thursday.
Clearly, I’m fond of Stephen, his team, and that show – it’s truly disheartening,” the host of Last Week Tonight expressed. “I’m partially looking forward to seeing what they have in store for the next 10 months. It’s distressing, distressing news for the world of comedy.
As a gaming enthusiast, let me share some trivia about two TV personalities who’ve left their mark: myself and John. Although we didn’t work together on The Daily Show, we’re friends, with me making an appearance on his show multiple times over the years. Interestingly, I used to watch The Late Show, starring David Letterman, when I was growing up in England.
For me, late-night shows hold a special place, not just due to my professional involvement but also because they were a source of fascination even during my childhood years in England. I used to watch David Letterman’s show, which, of course, was Stephen Colbert’s show, and it seemed like an incredibly glamorous world. Therefore, being able to appear on both Letterman’s and Colbert’s shows was always a tremendous joy. So hearing about the passing of David Letterman is heartbreaking news. I’m eagerly waiting to see what Stephen will do next because he’s a man who never stops pushing boundaries.
During the recording of last Thursday’s show at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City, Colbert informed the live audience about a decision that had been made the previous evening. This announcement was met with jeers from the crowd.
CBS announced that the cancellation was solely due to financial reasons amid difficulties in the late-night sector, and it has no connection whatsoever with the show’s ratings, content, or any ongoing events at Paramount.
Meanwhile, “Last Week Tonight” is taking a break until July 27. Recently, John Oliver was interacting with reporters in Erie, Pennsylvania, which is where the recently rebranded minor league baseball team, now known as the Moon Mammoths, is located. Originally called the Erie SeaWolves, they will play four games under their new name, but it remains uncertain if this name change is permanent.
Oliver stated that it’s up to the residents of Erie and their preference to decide now. If they wish to return the team to the SeaWolves, he found it enjoyable. However, if they want to continue with the Moon Mammoths indefinitely, then so be it.
On this special occasion, Erie Mayor Joe Schember officially named it Moon Mammoth Day. He also gifted Oliver a symbolic key to our city. This unique title honors George Moon’s 1991 discovery of a mammoth skeleton in Lake Pleasant, which has become a significant part of our local history.
Saturday night’s game drew a record crowd of 7,070 at UPMC Park.
