The remaining comedic shows on the 2025 TV schedule might as well call it quits, as nothing else is expected to surpass the outrageous and chaotic humor of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s current season. In fact, Season 17 has been receiving exceptional praise from both viewers and critics, with the prank in “Frank Is in a Coma” being hailed as a timeless classic. Given this, it’s no surprise that co-star Danny DeVito also has a story about pulling a prank of his own.
In the storyline of the actor, it wasn’t him or Frank who performed the unexpected magic tricks, but instead, his co-stars were the ones responsible. Rob McElhenney (now known as Rob Mac), Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, and Kaitlin Olson managed to execute one of the most legendary (though quite silly) April Fool’s pranks ever, largely due to DeVito being unaware of what day it was.
Mentioning the BTS Gang’s actual joke during a conversation with Collider, DeVito shared an instance from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” that was close to stepping over the boundary of good taste. He began the tale by saying:
(Note: I have not changed the meaning or tone of the sentence but made it more natural and easy to read.)
DeVito, when chatting with Collider, recalled a funny prank involving the BTS Gang from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” He initiated his narrative by saying:
It’s interesting, there was a television program that had been planned but never took off, which they hinted at years ago on April Fool’s Day of all days, without me knowing. At the time, I didn’t realize it was even April 1st. I didn’t even know the date. The plan was to begin filming for this show that very day. It was early morning, and a script for the first episode was delivered to my home. The message came that we were going to replace our initial choice with this new show, so I was instructed to read it right away before arriving at set. We were scheduled for a table read right then and there, so I promptly sat down and went through it.
As a seasoned movie critic, I had everything in order for the upcoming episode – my expectations set, the script safely in my home. Yet, an unexpected early notice hit my inbox; it appears the episode I was expecting has been switched out and another one is taking its place instead. The intrigue is piqued!
As the actor delved into the script, he arrived at a story point that sparked a flurry of intense physical acting, though it wasn’t necessarily slapstick humor that ensued. DeVito went on to say:
The show was excellent. The script was well-crafted, and it was “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” with a similar storyline. This time, Frank found himself in trouble for soliciting a prostitute and ended up being arrested. The episode ran about 30 pages, but the actor explained that it was mostly scenes of him being subjected to humiliation. He struggled to find the right words, but essentially, it occurred during a shower scene involving a white supremacist or police officer.
Personally, I believe it’s quite entertaining to compose more than thirty pages of content, even if it’s not usable, just to get Danny DeVito to say the phrase “butt-fucked,” regardless of the context.
In this situation, even Frank might feel compelled to contact someone instead of continuing with his routine. So, DeVito halted his review to clarify the details, and that’s when everyone realized it was all just a jest. To quote him directly:
Initially, I felt a bit anxious. Before I could complete it, I decided to contact them prematurely, without consulting my lawyer first. Instead of calling my attorney, I dialed their number. When they picked up, there was Kaitlin, Rob, Charlie, and Glenn, all laughing heartily on the other end. The reason for their amusement was the final line in my work, which had seven or eight police officers about to beat me with clubs, poised to arrest me, just before a man leaned over and whispered, “April Fool’s” into my ear.
During an upfronts presentation, DeVito, not wanting to be outshone by his TV colleagues, played a prank on them beforehand. He managed to persuade a hotel manager to bring four beds into a smaller room, leading his co-stars Day, Howerton, Mac, and Olson to believe they were all sharing the single room. Even Day’s wife and Howerton’s wife were part of the surprise trip.
As feelings intensified among everyone present, with Danny DeVito observing merrily from a distance, he admitted his part in the prank before anyone felt compelled to contact their network superiors in panic – as if they needed to seek assistance even from the president of FX!
The actors from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” consistently go above and beyond to entertain their audience, with Kaitlin Olson often risking her physical comfort for humor. It seems as though Danny DeVito might have been persuaded to take on even more daring scenes if the plot required it, such as revealing Frank’s backside. I think there ought to be a unique Emmy Award for such remarkable dedication.
The TV show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ is broadcast every Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time on FXX. If you have a Hulu subscription, new episodes will be available for streaming the following day.
