Renowned Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, who won an Oscar for The Great Beauty, will kick off this year’s festival with his newest film Grace (La Grazia), a project made in collaboration with frequent partner Toni Servillo. Actress Anna Ferzetti, known for her role in Diamonds, joins the cast of Grace. This highly anticipated premiere is set to take place on Aug 27th in competition.
Jim Jarmusch’s film trilogy titled “Father Mother Sister Brother” featuring Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver is expected to premiere at the Venice Film Festival this year, following a hint from Mubi head Efe Cakarel that it will most likely be part of their competition.
Some anticipated films slated for the Lido include: “The Smashing Machine” directed by Benny Safdie, distributed by A24 and starring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; “After the Hunt”, a thriller inspired by the #MeToo movement from Luca Guadagnino for Amazon MGM Studios, featuring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri; Chloé Zhao’s historical drama “Hamnet“, distributed by Focus Features and Universal, starring Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, and Joe Alwyn; and “Bugonia”, an adaptation of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi film “Save the Green Planet!” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who also collaborated with Emma Stone on this project. Focus Features will release it in the U.S., while Universal Pictures handles international distribution outside of Korea, where CJ ENM will be responsible for its release.
Netflix, a significant figure in Venice film festivals, took a break last year but is anticipated to return strongly for 2025. Some of the films expected to make a splash include Noah Baumbach’s comedy-drama “Jay Kelly”, starring George Clooney; Guillermo del Toro’s dark take on “Frankenstein” featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth; Edward Berger’s gambling-themed drama “The Ballad of a Small Player“, starring Colin Farrell, Tilda Swinton, and Fala Chen; and Kathryn Bigelow’s geopolitical thriller “A House of Dynamite“, featuring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso, and Jared Harris. These films are rumored to be bound for Venice.
2025’s Golden Lion will be chosen by the jury presided over by two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne, along with a group of globally renowned film professionals: Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, Chinese actress Zhao Tao, and Romanian director Cristian Mungiu. Together, they will select the winning film.
The 2025 Venice film festival runs Aug. 27 to Sept. 9.
