In just about a month, the Locarno Film Festival’s professional sector, known as Locarno Pro, will offer an action-filled itinerary right here in the picturesque Swiss lake community.
On August 7th, I’ll be attending an event where comedian and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid (from “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” and “General Hospital”) will launch a session titled “Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Crafting Movies That Save Lives.” It promises to be quite an inspiring start!
She will be accompanied by a group of distinguished industry figures, including Stuart Ford, the chairman and CEO of AGC Studios; Ed Guiney, producer of films such as “Poor Things,” “Pillion,” and “My Father’s Shadow,” who is also well-known for his longtime collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos; and Tricia Tuttle, the director of the Berlin Film Festival.
On the inaugural day of Locarno Pro 2025, a panel discussion will conclude the proceedings, with Claudia Bluemhuber, the CEO of Silver Reel, Sami Arpa, the CEO of Largo AI, Allison Gardner, the CEO of Glasgow Film, and entertainment lawyer Izzy Abidi from Freshly Ground Stories participating.
A notable event in the Locarno Pro 2025 lineup is the August 9 discussion titled “The Producer-Director Relationship”. This informal chat will feature director Radu Jude (known for films like ‘Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’, ‘Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World’, ‘Kontinental ’25’, ‘Dracula’) and producer Ed Guiney (renowned for movies such as ‘The Lobster’, ’11 Minutes’, ‘Poor Things’, ‘The Wonder’, ‘The Favourite’). During this session, they will discuss their collaborative journey and offer insights on navigating the intricate director-producer relationship to achieve a successful outcome – at least until the next project.
At this year’s Locarno Pro, I came across some fascinating discussions like “Constructing a Green Film World in Africa: Funding the Future Ahead,” “The Public-Private Dance: Revisiting Financial Approaches for Independent European Cinema,” and “Marketing Mastery for Timeless Films Today.” Each session offered valuable insights into the world of film finance, promotion, and sustainability.
The Locarno Pro event takes place from August 7th to the 12th. The ceremony for the Locarno Pro awards will be held on August 10th. On that day, awards for Open Doors, a filmmakers’ platform and talent development program from regions with artistic freedom concerns, will be distributed. The final awards will be given out on August 12th.
