Avatar: Fire and Ash Poster Reveals Oona Chaplin’s Villain Varang

The freshly unveiled poster for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” provides a sneak peek at its antagonist, “Varang,” portrayed by Oona Chaplin. James Cameron is directing “Avatar 3,” which serves as the continuation of the 2022 film Avatar: Way of Water. The upcoming “Fire and Ash” will be preceded by the fourth and fifth installments in the series.

The initial artwork for Avatar 3: Fire and Smoke has been revealed, providing a sneak peek of the antagonist, Varang.

On X’s (previously known as Twitter), the movie account announced, “Get acquainted with Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Catch the trailer before anyone else at cinemas this weekend, along with The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps.

Consequently, the trailer for Fire and Ash will be connected to the Marvel Studios film set to premiere on July 25th. Meanwhile, the third installment of the Avatar series is slated for release in cinemas on December 19, 2025. Furthermore, it’s anticipated that Avatar 4 and 5 will follow, with releases planned for 2029 and 2031 respectively.

In the latest installment of the franchise, the role of the emerging adversary, Varang, is taken on by actress Oona Chaplin. This new character, the head of the recently introduced Ash clan, will be making her appearance within the universe of Pandora in Avatar 3.

In an interview with Empire in January 2025, Cameron discussed the struggles faced by Varang’s tribe, stating that they had endured an extraordinarily difficult period.

He also mentioned that Varang is prepared to go to great lengths, even actions deemed “wicked,” all for the sake of her people. Cameron described Varang as a formidable foe, a complex character, who, thanks to Chaplin’s portrayal, seems genuine and lifelike.

Cameron further discussed shifting from the ‘human-centric antagonism’ seen in previous films. He emphasized their aim to transcend the simplistic ‘humans are evil, Na’vi are good’ stereotype.
