‘Power’ Prequel Focused on Ghost and Tommy Greenlit at Starz

Power isn’t running out of, well, power.

Starz has given the go-ahead for the fourth spinoff of the Power franchise, making it the fifth Power series overall – titled Power: Origins. This upcoming series, consisting of 18 episodes in its first season, will delve into the backstories of popular characters Ghost and Tommy from the original Power series. MeKai Curtis, who plays young Kanan Stark in Power Book III: Raising Kanan, will reprise his role. In terms of chronology, Power: Origins functions as a direct follow-up to Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

Omari Hardwick portrayed Ghost, also known as James St. Patrick, on the series “Power”, while Joseph Sikora played Tommy Egan. Due to their age, they are not suitable for the prequel; casting for new characters has not been announced yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sascha Penn, who serves as creator and showrunner for “Raising Kanan”, will take on this role for “Power: Origins”.

The actors Omari Hardwick (Ghost) and Joseph Sikora (Tommy Egan) were in the show “Power”, but they are too old to be in the prequel. The new characters have not been cast yet, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Sascha Penn, who manages “Raising Kanan”, will handle the prequel, titled “Power: Origins”.

I’m eager to delve deeper into the origins of the founders in the Power Universe,” Penn stated. “The histories behind Ghost and Tommy have captivated fans for years, sparking endless debates and theories. I’m overjoyed at the opportunity to shed light on some long-standing questions and reveal unexpected aspects of the story that will surprise viewers.

Kathryn Busby, head of original programming at Starz, stated, “Fans have been eagerly wanting to learn about Ghost and Tommy’s backstory ever since we were introduced to them in Power. With the debut of this series, we are fulfilling their wishes by providing a thrilling expansion to the franchise. This serves as an exciting next step in the story’s development as we delve into the rich history and significant events that molded these legendary characters.

In the initial interpretation, “Power Book II: Ghost” directly followed the events of “Power” and centered around James St. Patrick, Ghost’s son (portrayed by Michael Rainey Jr.), who continued his father’s illegal drug business endeavors. It is essential to note that in the original series, Ghost met his demise; thus, he is figuratively a ghost in this spinoff. The sequel series concluded its run in 2024 after four seasons.

In the ongoing (current) series, Power Book IV: Force, the character Tommy is still alive. On the other hand, Power Book III: Raising Kanan is concluding with its fifth season, which has already been produced. At the finale of Power, Egan staged his own death.
