As a fan, I’m excited to share that Opa Projects in Miami is hosting an exhibition titled “Out of LA: Contemporary Voices“, featuring works by eight remarkable artists from Los Angeles who were impacted by the devastating Southern California wildfires last January. This group showcase offers a rich tapestry of diverse pieces, spanning painting, sculpture, and media, that resonate with themes of survival, renewal, and resilience. Among the talented artists are Cleon Peterson, Ed Ruscha, Kour Pour, Emily Ferguson, Jessica Taylor Bellamy, Kenny Scharf, Nicholas Shake, and Zoe Walsh.

Notable pieces in this exhibition include Peterson’s “Between Fate and Destiny I,” a life-sized painting showcasing his primitive, ominous figures engaged in a tumultuous scene. Additionally, Ruscha’s “FAST FROM” (2019), an acrylic work on paper, explores text experiments. Ruscha shared, “I find the concept of a word transforming into a picture, then returning to being a word again, intriguing.” Lastly, Bellamy’s “Pastime Paradise” (2025) oil painting stands out as it portrays a disordered depiction of an LA Times newspaper with the headline “California’s Climate Apocalypse,” as it seemingly dissolves amidst a backdrop of burning foliage.

In the process of renewal, a gallery from outside Los Angeles acknowledges the unique artistic expressions that embody this city, not by looking back with nostalgia, but by taking action, expressing themselves, and firmly believing in shaping a vibrant creative future, as they communicated in their statement.

“Out of LA: Contemporary Voices” is on view through July 10.
