Billy Idol mourns alongside many others in the music industry following Ozzy Osbourne‘s death at 76 years old. Idol acknowledges Osbourne as a significant influence, stating that he “shows us the way” to achieve success as punk-rockers. In October, Idol joined forces with Ozzy during his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, performing “No More Tears.” The event also featured Steve Stevens, past collaborators Zakk Wylde and Robert Trujillo, along with Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. During this time, Ozzy commended Idol, suggesting he too deserves a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which coincidentally led to Billy’s nomination this year, even though he didn’t make it in this round.
Idol reflects on Osbourne’s impact on music and the path he paved for future generations.
It seems like he went out of his way for this. I’m still reeling from surprise because only a fortnight ago, he was performing on the Back to the Beginning stage in Birmingham. Honestly, I didn’t anticipate this turn of events. Yet, looking back, it seems that’s how things often unfold.
For quite some time now, he and I have had a long-standing acquaintance. We’ve occasionally collaborated on various promotional events together. Later, I was honored to be included in the invitation-only event for his solo induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was orchestrated by Sharon. That night was truly remarkable and rewarding. It served as a reminder of the genuine purpose that the Hall of Fame embodies. Often, one hears about its negative aspects, but on that evening, I witnessed only the positive. Being a part of Ozzy’s induction allowed me to gain this perspective.
It’s clear his endorsement played a significant role in my nomination this year. Seeing someone of his stature make such a statement was truly astounding. He’s reminiscent of David Bowie – an icon who has always inspired those of us who appreciate music, showing us how to persevere through it all. It’s almost unbelievable that both of them are no longer with us. Ozzy had such a vibrant presence and so much character… he was truly in the moment, relishing every bit of it. His music mirrored this essence as well.
My bandmate Billy Morrison is among Ozzy Osbourne’s closest friends. I’ve had a long-standing relationship with both Ozzy and Sharon, collaborating with them on numerous projects throughout the years. Our shared nationality as British expats in Los Angeles also bonded us. We both embarked on our solo careers around the same time. It’s truly remarkable how he managed to persevere, transitioning from Black Sabbath to a highly successful solo career. More recently, he reunited with Black Sabbath for an album a few years ago. Just two weeks ago, he was performing on stage, appearing to be in high spirits and thoroughly enjoying himself.
Ozzy had a deep affection for various aspects of life. He cherished the Beatles, rock ‘n’ roll tunes, and those who were dear to him, as they offered him a means to carry on. At one point, he believed his future was uncertain. But just like us in punk-rock, rock ‘n’ roll provided a path for us all, helping us transcend the notion that there was no hope for us. And Ozzy embodied this spirit. While many talk about his wild and unruly persona, it’s essential to remember that he held immense love for the music he created and the people who surrounded him. Witnessing him at the Hall of Fame induction was a heartwarming experience, as it showcased the numerous connections he had built over the years, with everyone expressing their admiration for him. In return, Ozzy reciprocated this love.
He provided musical avenues that resonated deeply with individuals such as myself during our formative years, a period marked by a thirst for inspiration. Black Sabbath and Ozzy played a crucial role in paving the way for punk-rock. In numerous aspects, this genre was significantly influenced by our earlier experiences, particularly those associated with the Sabs and Ozzy.
