Amazon Orders Aussie Rules Docuseries From ‘Drive to Survive’ Producer

Aussie rules football is set to get the Drive to Survive treatment.

The British sports documentary makers at Box to Box, known for creating hit docuseries like “Tour de France: Unchained” on Netflix, “Full Swing,” “Break Point,” and the globally popular “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” have been commissioned by Amazon Prime Video to create a documentary series that offers an inside look at the Australian Football League (AFL).

An upcoming docuseries, yet unnamed, is set to explore the events unfolding during the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership season. Filming kicks off this week, with a planned release on Prime Video globally in 2026. This series will employ the Box to Box approach, giving viewers exclusive backstage access and showcasing previously unseen drama.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the latest Amazon docuseries about the AFL. This series will expand upon their existing content, which already includes three captivating Amazon Original documentaries like “Making Their Mark,” “Kick Like Tayla,” and “Warriors On The Field.” Plus, it’ll be joined by other popular Australian sports docs such as “The Test,” “Shane,” and “The Defenders.” I’m all set to immerse myself in this world of sports stories!

Alexandra Gilbert, head of content at Prime Video Australia and New Zealand, stated that we recognize our customers’ deep-rooted enthusiasm for local sports, especially AFL. We’re thrilled to offer exclusive insights into the unique aspects and characters that make the AFL exceptional. To achieve this, we’re partnering with skilled narrative creators Box to Box. Our goal is to deliver authentic, unseen moments to fans, while simultaneously introducing Australia’s cherished sport to viewers across the globe.

Although cricket is often considered Australia’s national sport, it could be argued that Australian Rules Football (AFL) has taken over

The league is thrilled about partnering with Box To Box and Prime Video to bring more viewers closer to the sport. According to Bec Haagsma, AFL executive general manager customer and commercial, this partnership will allow new audiences to connect with our tales and the game itself. Additionally, our existing fans will have even more reasons to appreciate footy and its personalities. Australian Rules Football is deeply rooted in the Australian lifestyle and is filled with fascinating characters, captivating storylines, and emotions that bring people from all backgrounds together. This series is a valuable resource for the AFL as we strive to make football a part of every household in the country, and share our game and stories with international viewers.
