In this short film, we see Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education) and Asim Chaudhry (Barbie) portray two artworks – a painting and a statue – that have been in the same space for 250 years. Although they are aware of each other’s existence, their status as artworks prevents them from coming into contact or interacting with one another.

Throughout the evolution of time, from the remnants of 19th-century empires to lavish parties of the Bright Young Things, unexpected bombings during the night by the Nazis, and into today’s museums grappling with their colonial past, these unchanging figures stand still, hidden but vigilant. One day, fate brings them face-to-face, and for a brief, enchanting instant, time seems to freeze.

The film is created by Kαrimα Sammout Kanellopoulou, whose company Galazia Productions has been nominated for a BAFTA award, and co-produced by Chris Overton, an Oscar winner (for “The Silent Child”), as well as Slick Films, along with Brandy Bay Productions of Fox.

Among the main actors are Nathan Stewart Jarrett (playing a female character), Fenella Woolgar, along with up-and-coming performers Will Merrick, Andy Monaghan, and Hannah Onslow. Together, they portray a total of 22 different characters within their roles.

Fox stated that the narrative revolves around solitude, relationships, and the flow of time. It’s a classic love story, yet one told from an unusual viewpoint. The team that breathed life into this work is exceptional, and I’m delighted to debut it at HollyShorts.

Known for his performances in “Slow Horses”, “The Great” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon”, this actor has made a mark on audiences. He stepped into directing with the short film “Hero”, which earned him the Directorial Discovery Award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Additionally, he is currently involved in a feature documentary about British theater, being jointly produced by The Kenneth Branagh Company. Some of the big names featured in this project include Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Gary Oldman and Eddie Redmayne.

The creative team behind ‘The Painting & The Statue’ extends beyond just the main artists, with Ryan Eddleston serving as director of photography, Annie Symons designing costumes, Jules Chapman handling makeup, Violet Elliot taking on production design, and Arthur Pita contributing as choreographer.

The HollyShorts Film Festival is scheduled to take place from August 7th to the 17th, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. The complete list of jurors for this event, announced by The Hollywood Reporter, can be found here.
