NY Film Festival Sets ‘After the Hunt’ as Opening Night Movie

The 2025 New York Film Festival chose Luca Guadagnino’s movie “After the Hunt” to be its featured film on the opening night.

The film featuring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield is set to have its first screening in North America at the Alice Tully Hall in New York City on September 26th (Friday).

Post-Hunt“, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, delves into the life of Yale philosophy professor Alma, portrayed by Roberts, whose world is turned upside down when her protégée Maggie (Edebiri) accuses her close friend and colleague Henrik (Andrew Garfield) of sexual assault. The film navigates the complexities of modern morality, as Alma confronts the intricate web of gender, sexuality, race, and institutional power. In her struggle to come to terms with her past actions, Alma must tread carefully through these minefields. Directed by Guadagnino from a screenplay by Nora Garrett, “Post-Hunt” also features Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny in notable roles.

Following the recent announcement, “After the Hunt” has been chosen for the 2025 Venice Film Festival and will premiere in cinemas in New York and Los Angeles on October 10th, with a wider release scheduled for October 17th.

Guadagnino’s films, such as “Call Me by Your Name,” “Bones and All,” and “Queer,” have previously been showcased at New York Film Festivals.

For decades, the New York Film Festival has served as a trusted judge of world cinema. Over the years, it has exposed audiences to the bravest and most captivating global films from both seasoned and upcoming filmmakers. Guadagnino expressed this in a statement, stating that being asked to open the 63rd edition is a significant responsibility and honor. Alongside the remarkable cast, crew, and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios who made ‘After the Hunt’ a reality, we are overjoyed and excited to share with New York our story about morality and power. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Dennis Lim and the exceptional NYFF team.

The artistic director of NYFF, Lim, expressed, “We’re thrilled to kick off this year’s event with Luca Guadagnino’s latest work. This only reinforces his reputation as an innovative and daring filmmaker in the industry today. ‘After the Hunt’ is a unique gem in modern cinema – it’s intelligent, mature, and thought-provoking, yet it remains an immensely enjoyable watch.

The 63rd New York Film Festival is set run from Sept. 26-Oct. 13.
