The One Element Of The New I Know What You Did Last Summer That Hooked Me The Most

CAUTION: This article reveals significant plot points from the 2025 movie of “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. If you haven’t watched it yet, beware! Proceed with care to avoid spoilers that might linger in your mind.

Following some encouraging whispers about the 2025 remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, even from Eric Eisenberg’s assessment of the slasher legacy sequel, I decided to give it a shot. Regrettably, it merely solidified my dislikes about horror sequels with a tired storyline, underdeveloped characters, poor performances, grating dialogue, illogical twists, and not a single standout kill, in my view.

To be honest, while I’m not entirely thrilled with the latest horror flick that revolves around troubled teenagers being haunted for a mistake they made a year ago, there is something in the new version of I Know What You Did Last Summer that deserves recognition. In truth, it introduced an element that took me and my friends by surprise, earning a round of applause from us.

Are you eager to discover what I’m talking about? Then let’s get going; keep reading to uncover the answer…

I Love That The Movie Acknowledges I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

Before catching the latest release, I opted to experience for the first time the second edition, released in 1998 titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer“, which surprisingly turned out to be more enjoyable than the original, primarily due to its ironic aspects. Given its standing as a less acclaimed slasher sequel (and indeed, for good reasons), I assumed this gory Bahamian production would be disregarded in the new film, much like how David Gordon Green’s Halloween films tend to disregard everything that followed the 1978 horror movie icon.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit, the sequel appears to hold a soft spot for the second installment. One of its funniest gags features Tyriq Winters’ character, Teddy, suggesting they all jet off to the Bahamas to avoid the chaos caused by the killer – an idea Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character, Ray, cautions against, though he keeps his reasons under wraps. My top moment, though, has to be the mid-credits scene where Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) drops by her old college chum, Karla Wilson (Brandy Norwood, reprising her role from “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”). And speaking of which…

This Movie Could Have Used More Brandy

It seems the creators of the latest “I Know What You Did Last Summer” took Brandy Norwood’s advice when she suggested they should reach out to her during an interview with THR in 2024. But I can’t help but feel she was asking for a larger role than just a brief appearance in the credits, and honestly, I believe she deserved more than that small part.

In mere minutes on screen, the R&B artist, who is hands down my favorite aspect of “I Still Know…“, delivers a performance that outshines any of the original cast members in terms of appeal and impact. Consequently, I believe the movie could have been even more entertaining if Karla had a bigger part in the storyline, rather than just a fleeting, teaser-style cameo for potential sequels. Incidentally, speaking of which…

I Really Don’t Want A Sequel, Even With Brandy

In the opening, I made it clear that this horror movie series isn’t one of my favorites. I found the initial film unexciting, the second more entertainingly illogical (particularly due to its incredibly absurd plot twist), and I was warned against watching the straight-to-video “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”. This latest film failed to address my concerns about the earlier movies.

In essence, my experience with this franchise has shown me that it’s running low on creative fuel. Frankly, I believe it’s past due for a shutdown. I acknowledge that ending the series means we miss out on more of Norwood as Karla, but personally, I’d prefer to see her act in almost any other project. Maybe it’s time I watch her latest film from A24, titled The Front Room.

To be honest, if Brandy Norwood appears as Karla in another season of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” I might just tune in. However, judging by its opening weekend box office, it doesn’t seem to have attracted many cinema-goers. Still, it’s good to see that some fans are enjoying this new slasher movie, and if it brings an end to the Fisherman’s killing spree, that would be a fitting conclusion.
