Chad Michael Murray Opened Up About What He’d ‘Hope’ A One Tree Hill Reboot Focuses On, And It’s Very Meaningful

In the early 2000s, I was right smack dab in the heart of teenage pop culture, gracing both the small and big screens with roles on “Gilmore Girls,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “Freaky Friday,” “A Cinderella Story,” and oh, the joy I brought as Lucas Scott on “One Tree Hill.” With whispers of a reboot for “One Tree Hill” circulating, I, Chad Michael Murray, wanted to share some thoughts about what I’d like to see this revival highlight.

In August 2024, it was disclosed that a follow-up TV series was being made, with Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles confirmed as executive producers (who may also reappear in their original roles). However, Chad Michael Murray is not expected to be part of the show, but he expressed hope that it will be produced for a new wave of viewers. He mentioned this to Extra, stating:

I truly wish for this new generation. I genuinely hope so much. This show seems to resonate deeply with a lot of people, and it’s clear that it has done so, as it can still be found on platforms like HBO Max and has been popular everywhere. What amazes me is that we have fans who are only 13 or 14 years old, which leaves me astounded because they weren’t even born when we were filming. It’s hard for my mind to grasp the idea.

The actor is right that you can watch “One Tree Hill” online by subscribing to either HBO Max or Hulu. This makes the show accessible to a large number of people, whether they were fans when it originally aired from 2003 to 2012 or not.

As for what he’d hope to see from the reboot, he gave a very mindful response, saying:

If and when their plan succeeds, I can only hope that it centers around this current generation of children, who are facing unique challenges in today’s world. It’s essential for them to see characters on-screen they can identify with, thinking, ‘That’s me.’

One Tree Hill featured characters embodying common high school archetypes, ranging from athletes to intellectuals, dealing with genuine real-life themes such as first love, body image struggles, and intricate family relationships. These themes resonated with many viewers in various ways during the show’s run.

Over the last two decades, things have undergone a remarkable transformation, and although some of the original concerns persist, a revival of “One Tree Hill” would necessitate a fresh take on them. It’s heartening to know that Chad Michael Murray has given this idea some thought, and I hope the writers responsible for the reboot are equally contemplative about what new generations in Tree Hill, North Carolina, will encounter.

It seems that the Creative Minds Management (CMM) isn’t indicating a comeback just yet, but actor Tyler Hilton expressed his readiness to reprise his character Chris Keller. This is alongside Sophia Bush (Brooke Davis), Hilarie Burton (Peyton Sawyer), and Daneel Ackles (Rachel Gatina). I’m eagerly anticipating who else might join the cast, as well as the introduction of new, younger characters. Here’s hoping for a favorable update soon!
