The Wrapp – Horse girls, Snap happy heroes, and merging emojis

Last week’s issue of The Wrapp featured some team members embarking on different journeys for various events, while Catherine pondered over swapping her barbecue popcorn preference. This week, however, we delve into the world of gaming, with horse-themed games, humorous point-and-click adventures, and Marvel Snap all in the lineup. Here, we tackle only the weighty matters.

After pondering it thoroughly, I’ve chosen to dive headfirst into Umamusume: Pretty Derby. My goal is to share my impressions and create a comprehensive guide for newcomers who have minimal experience with gacha games, let alone horse racing. Stay tuned, fellow enthusiasts!

Reflecting on our nostalgic discussions in the latest podcast episode, I find myself craving more of that old-school vibe. Games such as Metal Slug Tactics, Yu Yu Hakusho: Slugfest, and Goddess Order are like a cure for this itch. And with The Biggleboss Incident marking our return to the point-and-click genre, it feels like stepping back into the roots of adventure gaming. There’s an overwhelming amount to explore, especially given the current buzz around K-pop.

Additionally, I will continue to weigh the pros and cons of subscribing to Crunchyroll.

This past week has been exceptionally hectic for me, causing a significant shift in my plans even from the previous weekend. Consequently, my gaming time on mobile devices will probably be limited, except for attending the Pokémon Go weekend events and further investigating After Inc.

I’ve got big plans for some PC gaming sessions; I’ve been gradually working on the Rimworld DLC (Space exploration!), striving to earn sainthood in Becoming Saint, and also playing Ultimate Chicken Horse, which is available on mobile, as well as For The King, which I hope will soon be playable on mobile devices too, with a few friends.

This weekend, I’m eagerly anticipating several exciting things, with Metal Slug Tactics and Yu Yu Hakusho: Slugfest being my main highlights. Additionally, Biggleboss and a point-and-click adventure reminiscent of Monkey Island are also on the agenda. As Iwan mentioned, all point-and-clicks share similarities in this regard.

It’s worth noting that Crunchyroll seems to be thriving lately, and it’s possible that mobile subscriptions could be the way of the future. I have a feeling that more of my funds may be directed towards such services in the near future.

Over the past weekend, I was in Canada at TennoCon, where I had a chance to chat with numerous fascinating individuals such as Amelia Tyler and Alpha Takahashi. As luck would have it, I find myself craving some Warframe action! My new laptop has just arrived today, so I’m excited to configure it and push its limits by using the maximum available graphics and bouncing around on every surface possible.

This upcoming weekend will have a unique twist for me since we’re celebrating my partner’s birthday. Instead of the usual gaming sessions, I expect to engage in a mix of Jackbox Party Games with friends and various board or card games. I’m excited to play Kezao, a vibrant speed-based card and dice game, along with The Real Truth from Goliath Games, which seems like a cryptid adventure. Additionally, I may watch them experiment with some new items they might receive as gifts on their special day, but I won’t give any hints here in case they see this message.

This weekend, I’ll be diving back into Marvel Snap again. Guess I can’t seem to break free from its grip (yep, I even picked up a Fantastic Four season pass). But with the unveiling of the new Grand Arena mode, my Saturday plans are all set.

Among their limited-time game modes, Grand Arena stands out as a temporary special event. So far, High Voltage has been my preferred choice due to its fast pace and the added excitement from extra energy. Additionally, they’ve organized events such as Deadpool’s Diner, which I found less appealing. This week’s Grand Arena allows you to pick one of eight champions, such as the Human Torch, who come with a pre-built deck. Unlike other instances, you start with an initial energy level of two instead of one, and your champion’s skill is already in your hand at the beginning.

This approach is beneficial for developers because it encourages experimentation among players. While experienced players like myself often settle on a winning strategy and stick with it, there are numerous cards to explore. Offering pre-built decks that don’t interfere with custom decks allows players to try new strategies more easily. On the other hand, beginners can start battling with their preferred heroes without having to spend time setting up a deck initially. I’ll let you know how it goes for me, but I might find myself going back to my Silver Surfer three-point strategy by Monday, who knows?

On Sunday, I’ll be jetting off to China for my first time at the Pocket Gamer Connects Summit Shanghai. I’m excited to check out some fresh video games as well!

Initially, I dabbled in the game Merge Maestro, and I must say, it left a strong impression. Despite its seemingly straightforward appearance, it conceals intricate layers. The positioning of your tokens plays a crucial role, as certain spots can boost their abilities, while others might render them useless. Moreover, deciding when to merge these tokens presents an interesting challenge. Some tokens have potent passive skills like causing damage to all enemies each turn, which you’d want to preserve for longer periods. Therefore, I intend to explore this game further over the weekend and uncover more of its intricacies.
