The thrilling initial trailer for James Cameron‘s upcoming ‘Avatar’ fantastical epic has been released online unofficially – and it appears breathtakingly amazing.
Disney is premiering the trailer for “Avatar: Fire & Ash” exclusively in theaters before the release of “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Similar to how Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” trailer was only shown in theaters earlier this month, unauthorized copies of the “Fire & Ash” trailer have started appearing online. However, Disney seems to be doing a better job at keeping the trailer hidden as compared to Universal’s film, with illegal copies being removed quickly whenever they surface.
It’s clear that fans have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the trailer. The Sci-Fi Sietch website declared it as “incredible.” Another fan was ecstatic, stating that the footage was “some of the most stunning I’ve seen this year,” and felt a palpable sense of dread and anger – with fist fights occurring within cosmic volcanoes, heroes appearing terrified, and large-scale aerial battles. Another entertainment journalist wrote that the trailer initially seemed ordinary but ended up being a potential billion-dollar investment for James Cameron. Lastly, a film critic expressed that the visuals were on an entirely different level, and while ‘epic’ doesn’t seem sufficient, there is no doubt in their mind that this will undoubtedly be the top movie of 2025.
The trailer unveils two fresh tribes: the Wind Traders and the flame-throwing Ash People tribe. The scenes depict (spoiler alert for those who care about such things) high-octane aerial combat involving Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), his Na’vi kin, the Ash People clan, and Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang, adorned with striking white, black, and red war paint, hinting at a possible alliance with the Ash People). A key moment shows Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) receiving a threat from a new antagonist, Varang (Oona Chaplin), “Your goddess holds no power here.” Sully, who expresses concern, “we cannot continue like this,” is subsequently captured and displayed by the occupying forces. Additionally, it appears that Spider (Jack Champion) is in considerable danger throughout the storyline.
Initially, the film “Avatar,” launched in 2009, shattered records by becoming the highest-earning movie of all time, grossing approximately $2.9 billion worldwide. The first sequel, titled “The Way of Water,” released in 2022, ranked as the third-highest-grossing film ever (with earnings of $2.3 billion), surpassing predictions and quelling doubts about whether the Academy Award winner could repeat the success of another “Avatar” blockbuster. At present, few question James Cameron’s knack for drawing enormous box office revenues with the “Avatar” series, and anticipation is high that “Fire & Ash” will meet expectations when it premieres as a significant holiday blockbuster on Dec. 19.
It’s still unclear when it will be released, but Cameron hinted that the upcoming movie “Fire and Ash” might run a tad longer compared to “The Way of Water”, which clocked in at approximately 3 hours and 12 minutes.
Essentially, Cameron remarked that the first act of [Way of Water] was overflowing with fantastic ideas, making it feel like a speeding bullet train. This rapid pace left us lacking in character development, so he suggested dividing it into two parts. As a result, [Fire & Ash] will actually turn out to be slightly longer than [Way of Water].
Cameron is planning to direct a total of five Avatar movies, with the first four already having significant footage filmed. The release dates for Avatar 4 are scheduled for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 will follow on December 19, 2031.
Additionally, Cameron plans to transform the Charles Pellegrino novels, “Ghosts of Hiroshima” and “Last Train From Hiroshima,” into a movie once his work on Avatar allows it. This film will center around a real-life account from World War II about a Japanese man who miraculously survived both the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If successful, this project would represent Cameron’s first film outside of the Avatar series since 1997’s Titanic.
The cast of “Fire & Ash” features Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Bailey Bass, Jemaine Clement, and David Thewlis.

As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: “After the heart-wrenching loss of Neteyam, my beloved family in the Na’vi tribe faces new challenges. We cross paths with the fiery and aggressive Ash People, led by Varang, adding fuel to the turmoil on Pandora. As the conflict intensifies, a fresh perspective on morality arises.
Disney had no comment on the leak.
