King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard announced on Friday that they will be removing their music from Spotify, as the band has expressed disapproval due to the platform’s CEO, Daniel Ek, investing in a defense company.
Greetings everyone, here’s a heads-up for those who might not know: Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, is investing heavily in artificial intelligence for military drone technology. In response to this, we have decided to take our music off the platform. Can we come together and encourage these tech innovators, who seem reminiscent of Dr. Evil, to make better choices? Let’s unite on a different platform instead.
As a gamer, I’m guessing King Gizzard might be alluding to Helsing, the German defense tech giant that my pal Ek’s investment firm Prima Materia recently pumped $700 million into. You know, the same Ek who also sits as chairman of Helsing.
Band King Gizzard boasts an expansive collection of close to 30 albums; at the time this article was written, King Gizzard had approximately 1.5 million listeners on Spotify each month. At the current moment, only the 2022 EP “Satanic Slumber Party” remains available on the platform.
A representative for Spotify didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.
Over the past month, King Gizzard has become the most recent and well-known artist to withdraw their collection from Spotify, following news about Prima Materia’s investment. Similarly, Deerhoof declared their intention to remove their music at the end of June, expressing concerns that, “We don’t want our music unintentionally causing harm to people. We don’t wish for our success to be linked with AI war technology.
Yesterday, experimental band Xiu Xiu expressed that they are withdrawing their music, labeling Spotify as a “trash pit, a violent gateway to Armageddon.

It’s worth noting that Spotify has encountered similar situations before, where artists have removed their music due to disagreements over controversial matters. Specifically, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell took down their entire catalogues from the platform in protest against misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines being spread on Joe Rogan’s podcast. However, both artist’s songs returned to Spotify last year.
