After many years of dedicated service, Richard Stermer, a long-time employee at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has decided to retire, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
For Los Angeles residents who are part of the Academy, this is significant information. The reason being that Stermer, since 1994, has been a prominent figure at the 1,000-seat Samuel Goldwyn Theater located within the Academy’s headquarters in Beverly Hills. He started as the deputy theater manager and later became the theater manager, and since January, he has held the position of senior theater manager. Throughout his tenure, Stermer oversaw various events such as screenings for members during weekends, Oscar nominations announcements early in the morning, and premieres hosted by studios who rented the venue from the Academy.
Stermer, who juggles multiple roles such as part-time actor, songwriter, composer, and voice artist, has occasionally been called upon to make voiceover announcements at prestigious events like the Academy’s Oscar nominations ceremonies, scientific technology programs, and luncheons for Oscar nominees. These events draw a lively mix of press, publicists, and industry insiders.
Stermer’s previous boss, the one who managed the Academy’s theater when Stermer first started working, was Robert Rigamonti. Unfortunately, Rigamonti passed away unexpectedly in 2013, and that’s when Stermer was promoted to his position.
Ric Robertson, who served as the Academy’s executive administrator from 1989 to 2011 and COO from 2011 to 2013, praises THR by saying, “Richard is simply amazing. He’s a fantastic manager, meticulously organized, and always ready for anything. I used to attend screenings and observe him before the film, as he would walk up and down the Goldwyn Theatre aisles, greeting people and inquiring about their children or grandchildren. I like to refer to him as the Mayor of the Goldwyn. He was the epitome of a gracious host, always friendly and making everyone feel at ease. It was truly remarkable.
Stermer, in a characteristically self-effacing move, declined to comment for this piece.
