British Comic Nish Kumar on How YouTube Helped Him Achieve Success Outside of the U.K.

British comedian and podcast presenter, Nish Kumar, acknowledges the significance of Netflix specials in boosting the profiles of renowned comics such as Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.

However, he observes that up-and-coming comedians similar to himself are typically building their careers gradually, only achieving significant global recognition through YouTube following years of performing at various venues domestically. “I’ve gained my popularity primarily in North America due to a British show called Taskmaster,” Kumar said during his performance at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, which is widely watched outside the UK on YouTube.

Reruns of the British comedy panel game show, “Taskmaster,” featuring Kumar, are being watched on YouTube. As creator-driven online platforms continue to shake up the conventional media world, and podcasts like Crooked Media’s “Pod Save the UK,” co-hosted by Kumar and cultural journalist Coco Khan, reshape the audio sphere.

After performing at a live comedy show in London produced by Crooked Media, Kumar received an unexpected call from Hollywood. Just moments after leaving the stage, he got a call from Los Angeles, asking him to attend a meeting in London within twenty minutes.

Kumar stated that he had found himself among the spectators, much like Courteney Cox in the ‘Dancing in the Dark’ music video. Surprisingly, I was singled out from the audience for a special encounter.” Later on, Crooked Media approached him with the idea of creating and hosting a British program, which he accepted.

Kumar’s “Pod Save the UK” provides a weekly update on U.K. politics, allowing Kumar and co-host Khan to discuss the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson due to his violations of party rules while the country was experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kumar believes that Johnson’s handling of the pandemic will be a topic of study for years, due to its historical significance as a leadership failure. However, he offers an interesting perspective on why Donald Trump, who is often criticized for his unconventional and erratic style, was re-elected for a second term in the White House. This is despite many viewing him as a political buffoon.

Donald Trump has significantly narrowed down the diversity within the Republican Party, to the point where it seems less like a political group and more like a means to serve one individual. This situation, as he emphasizes, poses a significant issue.

With Nigel Farage, a protege of Trump, gaining ground against the current British Labor government in the polls, Kumar is less than thrilled about the prospect of his Reform UK party taking control, as it would dampen his political humor.

Kumar stated that both Farage and Trump have an unapologetic nature, which can make it challenging to satirize them. Typically, politicians are expected to maintain a certain level of decorum, allowing for the identification of principles to critique. However, Farage and Trump seem to be inherently shameless individuals.

The Just For Laughs comedy festival continues through Sunday.
